I know zip about salt water fishing.
My son is going fishing down on the coast with a friend and is going to use his bait casting reels that he uses for bass in fresh water lakes. I told him he should wash his reels with fresh water when he finishes - either in the sink and let water run over the spool or with a hose outside, and he should be ok.
Is that correct advice? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah. Rinse them off thoroughly with fresh water, then after the salt trip is done, oil & grease the appropriate parts just to be safe.

all above is good advice, i use my Curado's all the time in saltwater and they are fine with just a rinsing and then lub and clean when get home. i did have some bad results with some Pflugers i had which was suprising since my buddy uses them and didnt have problems. i think i had newer ones than his and i believe the changed the type of metal used in mine and they didnt like salt water.

Washing them works fine from the bank or boat fish but if your in the surf they will die. Shimano is the only one I found that will work for surf fishing. Use them and when you get home take them to someone for a good cleaning.

I would not keep the reel submerged or under running water for an extended period of time. That allows salt and sand to reach the insides of the bearings. Lightly rinse the reels after each use and perform a normal breakdown and clean the reel once you make it home. I completely break down my reels every month or so. I have been using a few of my reels for 5 years fishing saltwater just about every weekend. As long as you keep them clean, they will last quite some time.

The washing off woth freshwater is the way to go and like stated do not do it for a extended amount of time because the sand and salt will make its way further into the reel. Also, use a low pressure, like a rain or mist setting on a sprayer as higher pressure will also force sand and salt further down. If possible, I take the handle, side cap where backlash wieghts are, spool tension ring off (Shimanos) and oil them good. Finally, I have started to use hot water to rinse them off as this dissolves the salt better. Anyway, no problems from mine but I do get them proffesionally cleaned once a year from a local guy in Rockport.
Keep a tight line!

I figured I would post a pic of how I break my reels down. I try and do this at least once a month. A mixture of water and Simple Green (75/15) works wonders on the internal reel parts. I use a toothbrush to scrub the parts. Grease the plastic parts and oil the metal parts after cleaned. As good as new once complete FYI - That's a 50MG thats been used and abused.

ACK, too many pieces, make the bad memories stop. No, seriously, the further you can break a reel down the better. I did this once, was so proud of myself till it came time to put back together, I think it is still sitting in a box somewhere, that was three years ago. Justin Time is right, this is not a hard break down, but personally any further and I would have a professional clean it for me, but again that is just me.
Keep a tight line!

I have used shimanos in saltwater all the time and that is the only reel that i would use in saltwater. After you fish make sure you rinse them out. I always fill a bucket of water spray them down them dunk them into the bucket of water. lube them afterwards. I tried a shakespear i caught out at lake houston one time and it did not make it through the day.

I put my rods and reels in the hotel room shower, turn it on for a while and then come back and direct the shower head over every inch. Gotta get those rod eyes too. When I get home, I take them apart and wash them again and re-lube them.
Make sure they are well lubed BEFORE you go too.

I use my freswater reels in saltwater and never have any problems. I spray them down with a light mist. I even spray the rod guides down as well.
Usually I break the reels I put in saltwater down about once a month a give a quick cleaning.....

I've read that magnesium (MG) and saltwater don't mix. So leave the MG reels at home and stick with the aluminum body reels. As previously stated, rinse thoroughly after each use and a good cleaning/lubing at the end of the trip.

I never could afford to buy a specail salt series reel. Old Garcias have lived through much of the salt life and still came out on top. Same with the Shimanos. Gotta wash them with the freshwater, oil and lube as normal. Don't let them sit to long before washing them or it will just be worse to clean.
If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.
