We might go to Austin some time in July while my wife attends a conference. I'm thinking about taking along my gear and trying to beat KC's record (hah!). I'll probably have my kids with me, so any place I fish needs to: (1) be safe; (2) have a bathroom nearby; and (3) give us a reasonable chance of catching something (I won't have time to carry out a huge baiting campaign). Are there any swims that fit these requirements?

I am not much of an authority on Lady Bird but I like to fish the Pleasant Valley area.
Where punters are punted.

Are you just looking for carp? Carp or buffs, either one.

S-n-N, little off topic here but I was just watching NBC5 and they were showing a story on Dara Torres and they showed a guy in the crowd that looks just like you!
As far as LBL, wouldn't the 35 or another bridge be nice and safe? I've only fished LBL a few times so I can't be sure. I seem to remember just east of 35 toward the boat ramp and ball fields was a very nice looking area.

no bathrooms at the 35 bridge. The Peninsula is pretty much the only place other than 1st street bridge and Eilers with a proper bathroom

First Street Bridge. You can sit in the gazebo there and watch the playground with one eye and your rods with the other. I don't know the schedule for the Port-a-Potties, but they were there all day Friday when we were there. You have a playground at the Kiddie Park Swim, but it generally isn't as productive as other swims. No Kiddie Potties.
You will most likely have locals to keep you company, but that's the case for most swims around the lake.
Melrose if fished properly will be comfortable and productive; same with Pleasant Valley. No potties at either though.
For Potty Arrangements, I would suggest a tent and a bucket with a trashbag for a liner. Don't forget TP and Baby Wipes ;-)
Let me know if you have any specific concerns.

Not sure there would be a better place then the play ground swim just down from the holiday in kids will have fun and with just a couple hours you have as much chance of catching there in the summer then any where on the lake also there is a rest room near by and plenty of shade trees....I caught a small mirror carp there last summer in the margins on sweet corn
