My son and I took a two day camping trip to Roberts on Monday. I didn't think the weather had been warm enough for the crappie to start going strong in the Elm Fork. Thus we hit the main lake and started chasing sandbass in 30 feet of water. After about 20 minutes of fishing, he hooked into a fish that started taking some serious drag. It took more 20 minutes time to land this big kitty.

It was a blast to see him land that fish on a rod and reel. I'm also glad that he spends some serious time in the weightroom. He's always wanted to catch a big cat and he got his chance!

Hope everyone is doing well.

I don't normally jug fish, but brought the jugs along and was about to put them out. However, only 20 minutes into the sandies and bang the big kitty hit my son's slab. I grew up trotlining and it's not my cup of tea - young people like watching the jug take off for a ride. Who would have believed a rod and reel would claim big fish for this trip?

My son missed the rod and reel record on Roberts by a pound. When we first weighed it, it went 38 pounds and 3 ounces on my digital scales. It lost a couple of pounds by the time the certified scales arrived - about 2.5 hours. The folks at TPWD and Texas Fish & Game did their best. I checked my Rapala scales in the garage this morning with a 10 lbs. weight and the scales were spot on. He will still receive a certificate for a big fish catch from TPWD.

The current rod & reel record for a flathead on Roberts is 37.31.

Good job Billy!!!!!!!!! Comes from great instruction (Bill)....I know he had to have a blast.

Tell him picking up those large trees for campfires was good training on getting that flathead in..
