Ok, I'm trying to find out if there is such. My mother tells me of my great-grandfather who had a bait camp w/cabins & boat rentals near Jecker's Cove. Supposedly he put a pole with a 'flag' on rock pile of sorts to warn boats of it. Thus became the name 'flagpole island'. Has anyone ever heard of this? Of course the camp is all gone & supposedly there are mansions there now. Just trying to find out if fact or urban family legend...

Yes, out from Jeckers and the Llano County boat ramp, just south of Red Rock Creek there is a rock island that comes up from 20 to 30 ft of water that at one time had a pole with a flag (and then a traffic cone). Most locals refer to it as "Flag Island". The area is marked with hazard bouys now but I am not sure about the flag or the pole, I think they are gone. Definitely an area that I make sure to locate before I high tail it across the lake.

No more flagpole on it, but like RiverRat said, there are marker bouys. There is nothing much on the banks in that area.
Back in 98 or 99 when I first fished Buch, I got stuck in a storm out there, couldn't see land in any direction. Tried to travel in the direction of the wind, thinking I would end up at the dam and scoot up the shoreline from there. Somehow I kept going in a circle and coming up on Flag Island, when it had the flagpole on it. Bought a GPS the next day...

Yep, Dave, had a friend who lost a lower unit during a club tournament because he "forgot" where he was at in relation to the island. Could've been a lot worse than a lower unit had he not cut the wheel at the last minute. Was able to limp the boat back across the lake to Morgan Creek with a nice size hole in the lower unit.

Flag Island is an area you really need to watch when the water level is down. Some of them rocks are bigger than my boat. Good area for striper fishing and just a short distant away is a good catfishing hole. Kinda gets your attention when you are watching a boat blasting through the buoys, you just standby and listen for a lower unit to impact the rocks. The thing to remember the island is below the water surface normally.

Thanks guys for the info. I do not live anywhere close to there (Houston), but I wanted to verify the folklore of flag island. I believe he probably put that pole & flag in the 1920's-30's. Maybe I'll visit it one day & put the flag back.
