Will braided line work on a big Zebco reel, such as an 808?
I have heard conflicting opinions but nothing definite.
Would like to know it will work before shelling out 15 bucks or so for Power Pro.
Thanks!

Braid may dig into the inner spool and be a mess to try and clean out... I would use mono and put 5-10 of braid on the end of the spool and see how it does...

So you are saying that a full spool of braid might be so thin that it will "bite" down into the underwindings if put under pressure and cause problems? Never having used braid, does it bite into the reel windings on a baitcaster if put under pressure? I may just "bite the bullet" and wind my 808 with braid and try for myself to see if it will work. Might be worth the money just to know.

If the stud that catches the line when winding in is nylon the braid will saw it off.

I got an 808 and have used it for years, and I use braid, (spider wire) and Stren braid on my baitcasters, but me personally, I wouldn't use it on the Zebco.
For one it wasn't designed for it, as it doesn't stretch and you can damage the gears if you have a heavy fish or snag and put sudden hard pressure on the reel, and if you ever have a knot or tangle and it gets into the main reel you might as well pull out the knife as you won't be untangling it, plus the fact it will, over time, damage the pickup pin (cut a groove in it) no matter if it is metal or not.
But then again it's not like the reel cost that much anyway that it will break the bank to replace it!
Use a barrel swivel tied to the main mono line and use the braid as a leader. I've done this before and had good results.
I use Trilene Big Game 20# mono on mine and it works really well.
