No safety course needed. It would be a good course to take though.

Last I recall reading, yellowcat, you're 13 or 14 years old. If so then this part applies.

Quote:
1. Who must take boater education?

Anyone born on or after September 1, 1984 and under the age of 18 must complete a TPWD-approved course and be certified with TPWD to operate:

any vessel over 10 horsepower,
wind-blown vessel over 14 feet and
all personal watercraft.
Some violations of the Water Safety Act also require course completion.

yellowcat,

In your example 1) you're under 18 and 2) the motor is larger than 10HP.

The answer is yes.

We have someone locally that gives the course for about $40. Don't be shy about taking it, you'll learn alot of good info! thumb

i dont mind taking it, it is just that the river is up now and me and a buddy are waning to run some lines. but we want to be sure we are legal.

one more question

my buddy is also 16 and has a drivers license and has a 14' boat with a 1.5 H motor on it can him or me legally drive the boat on public water?

You do have to have it unless you are 18. You can take the course on-line at the TPW web site and print off your certificate. I think the cost is $10. They will send your card in the mail. It will only take about 30 minutes to complete the on-line course.

My 15 yr son took it, its no big deal at all.

BTW theres alot of "boaters" over the age 18 that would benefit from this class! rolfmao rolfmao rolfmao
