I was wondering, what your favorite bait for catfish is? I usually use stink bait, and I end up using magic bait, but I was wondering if anybody had a bait that they use and have had success with. I have also used Powerbait.

So anyway, what is your favorite type of catfish bait?

I use liver, but only because I can never seem to find any shad.

Shad is all time favorite(rod and reel). Easy to catch them from April through Oct(most of the time) witha cast net.

4 to 8 inches either cut in half or just a couple of inches cut off the tail end. Grind or chop up the tail peices for chum.

You can buy a jar of shad guts some places which work even better than the actual shad most of the time.

Live perch for jugs or trotlines(5 inches or bigger)

Shad either big gizzard heads or smaller ones with the tail cut off.

As far as prepared bait goes I'm a big fan of the Team Catfish Secret 7. It cleans up really well when it's time to go to the house and it'll put them in the cooler too.

In my opinion if you use Big Marvs you can expect to catch catfish(they have to be in the area)within seconds. On Tuesday at Calaveras I was throwing Marvs about 20' and using a spinning reel. By the time it hit the water and I manually closed the bail it was time to reel in a fish. I timed it and it was 3 seconds on almost every cast once I was on fish.

I also use stinkbait. It always works for those channels.

Perch over shad, then shad, then stink bait.. but if im just after a bunch of eating sized cats its all stink bait / cheese bait by far. shrimp works good too, but i like being able to catch free bait!
rmonter trotlines are legal in texas but just check the regs on texas parks and wildlife website for the regs.
