Hackberry Rod & Gun is awesome! Fished with those guys several times. Great food and the new lodge is perfect. Check out the website and give Cpt. Buddy a call!

Lot of good fishing on the Big Lake. It's amazing how many fish they can take out of there and it still keeps producing.

Oh yeah. I dont use a guide though.
If you have a boat ( even a small one) and a galvanized trailer, you can launch at the Ellender boat ramp under the bridge, right into the Intracoastal. ( on hwy 27) Head north to the ship channel intersection. Fish from there all the way back down to the ramp. You can even do this in a bassboat. Just be sure and WASH it down and flush the engine for a LONG time right after you leave.
If you have a center console....pass up the bridge....stop in Hackberry at the grocery store on the right and buy some frozen bait shrimp. (or live shrimp at Spicer's along the way)...go to Holly beach, turn left...all the way to the ferry landing. There's a ramp to the left of the ferry. Head north in the ship channel to the first cut on your left. Fish it all the way into West Cove. Lots of reds along the way. For specks...stay in the ship channel til you get to the washout ( marked on the map)....to the east. Cut east into Big Lake and head north...slowly until you get to LONG Point. Drift the edges of the long point reef. You'll catch all you want.
Have fun !
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Shhhh! Dont tell so many people about the fact that 8-9 lb trout are common down there !
You guys be careful. There is still a lot of debris in Big Lake ( especially the LNG and Turner bay areas) from Rita.

Caught the biggest Bull Red and Black Drum I've ever seen down off the Jetties, to the left. All the trout got blown away by Rita...

went out yesterday evening for a few hours and managed some real nice trout and one red. The weirs on the south end of big lake seem to be the place right now. Boats had them surrounded, so we decided to fish the shoreline between the two and managed some fish. Off again this afternoon.

Fishing was slow, the high pressure put the lock jaw on the fish. We found some trout (3 to 4#s) in west cove, just off the east side of rabbit island.
Some other guys i know fished all day saturday and didn't land a fish. they fished long point, south reef, and west cove.
