Hello all, hope you all are doing great. I am having a little trouble with my BPS nitro reel. The drag will does not seem to set. What I normall do to get me started is loop my hook through the hook place holder (the little bitty eyelit on the bottom of the pole) I will tighten it until the spool doesnt turn. But for some reason this does not work. ALL the way tight the spool will just spin. It almost cost me a BIG fish two days ago. Any ideas?

First I have to ask, are you using braided line?

Did you use some sort of backing like mono before spooling it with braid? If not then the line is probably spinning on the spool which makes it seem like the drag isn't working. To check just tighten down the drag then start to pull the line out. While doing that look at the lip of the spool and see if it's spinning with the line or if it stationary.

Well I have never put backing on my reels before, and this has never happened to me. However, this nitro reel does not have holes in the spool and for me it is hard to tie a tight knot without them. That may be a problem as well.

I knew it was something simple. Every week I have a few customers come by complaining about the drag on their new reel not working and 99.9% of the time it's because of the braid.

Braid will spin on the low mass spools (drilled spools) also just not as easily. Throw about 10 yards of mono and uni knot the braid on. Some people use masking tape or teflon tape as a backing with success but I like to use mono.

Glad I could help.
