From personal experience do any of you have any idea what would be the better MPGs on the road?

I been try to research used Motor homes now I going to work on truck/travel trailers and see what conclusions I come to.

The main conclusion I have come to so far is that I can get took very very easy buying old used RVs.

With my old pickup (2003 dodge 2500 diesel) I was getting anywhere from 13-15 mpg pulling my 27' 5th wheel. My new truck only gets about 12 pulling the same trailer ('08 Chevy 2500 diesel)

I don't know for sure, just a professional guess, the motorhomes with a diesel engine, like a C-12 kitty Cat sould get something like 10-12.

for what its worth,
I borrow my father in-laws motorhome for going to nascar races pretty regular and.....

40 foot class A with 400hp Cummins running 70 with no head wind it gets about 8 mpg. That is with the generator running as well for the big air conditioners (it shares the diesel tank). Drive it 75 with head wind and the mileage is about 6mpg. I drive it pretty hard though.

What was that?

I have looked on and off and fuel economy wise I have always found (just from research, not personal experience) that the truck/trailer get better mileage.

If you are worried about getting taken when buying you would be better off getting a trailer. At least then you only have to worry about leaks, soft floors, plumbing, AC/Heating, etc instead of worrying about all of those things, and the drivetrain with a class A or C

One other thing to consider. My brother works on RVs and he said that most Class C RVs are much more expensive if you ever have to replace the motor. He said that he regularly has to remove the entire front axle and suspension and drop the engine from under the vehicle. The Class A are simply whatever is neccesary on the vehicle they are based on (usually a big van)

If you want to get some answers from owners, there is a website called escapees.com. Those people are full timers and part timers with all kinds of rigs. They are very helpful and full of info.

I have gotten lots of good info there. You can just read and research or you can join and ask questions. Give it a try.

part of the drop in fuel economy in the last few yrs is the low sulfer diesel.

no matter what you get, a diesel will get better mileage than a gasser regardless of what you get.

Also, with a motorcoach, you dont have a "vehicle" to drive upon arrival unless you tow a toad.
