You're supposed to take fish outside the slot for the slot to work.

I know how you feel. When I started fishing I kept almost everything that I caught. Now I practice catch and release probably 90% of the time. I do everything possible to safely remove deep hooks, and safely handle all the fish that I release. I hate to see a fish floating on the water. But I will occasionally keep or give away fish. I was also going to ask if you informed the kid if he understood that there is a slot limit? Some people that I have talked to, that fish for food only, don't realize that there are different regulations.

Great story! I have done the same surf fishing..I'm a Newbie to Bass fishin..I have a Question! What's a slot limit?

a slot is made for trophy bass lake mgnt most slots are like
14"-24" anything inside the slot must be released but under or over the slot my be kept most the time say a five fish limit you can keep 5 under sized and/or 4 under size and one over... hope this helps...

Nothing wrong with not knowing what 'slot' means.....heck I'd like to meet the guy that asked me (about 6 years ago) "HEY...is there a slot on this lake?" and I replied "If there is, I don't know where it would be". .....LOL!!!....I thought a 'slot' was maybe where you put your boat in the water or something. I had no idea...then when I found out, boy I felt stupid.

Hat's off to you sir. Most slot lakes NEED to have some smaller fish retained to keep from overpopulating and causing a break in the food chain. You were well within game laws and the laws of good sportsmanship, IMO. I too fish almost strictly catch-and-release for bass, but if someone wants (or needs) some to eat, that is a resource available to all of us. Not to mention the impression your awesome gesture left on this family. We need more like you in this world. Thank you!
