Boat/motor have no problem getting on plane and then when I hit about 5000 rpms, the boat lurches forward like the motor is getting more power and then it backs off. If I keep it steady at 5000 rpms it will do this regularly, and anything under that it does not do it at all. Not really sure what is causing this, any ideas?

Sounds like a fuel problem such as fuel pump or possible collapesed fuel line if it has the gray fuel line I would check that for sure or even a anti siphon valve at fuel tank....OPTI

Opti, I see you know alot about mercury outboards? My question is what is the red linning on a mercury 150hp and it's carburated. I put a 4 blade prop on it for a spare and at 5200 rpms it running 54mph and with my 3blade prop at 55rpms it will run at 60mph. I don' want to red line it if i can help it thats why im wondering what the red line rpms are for that moter? Thanks for your help.LWC

It always helps to know what motor you guys are running. Anytime you have surging, you better get it fix quick because it is an indication of a lean fuel condition and the next surge may be its last.

On a carberated 150 range is 5000 to 5600 and it sounds like your right in that range.....OPTI

You can run your 150 Mercury 5700-5800 rpms without any problems. Like the other two guys said you must have a fuel delivery problem.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure its not the prop coming out of the water. I will start with the fuel lines, fuel filter, and spark plugs, then the fuel pump. I guess start with the easy stuff first! By the way its a 1990 Merc 200 hp XR6.

I had the exact same issue this fall with my Yammy...same symptoms and all. I had a collapsed fuel line.
