When I moved to Lubbock in 95, and I asked about where to fish, everyone said "What are you talking about? You are right in the middle of fishing country. I said "What!" They said "Yeah, 2 1/2 hours any direction and you can fish." Seriously though, Lake McKenzie is about the closest I know of besides Alan Henry. I have heard that White River is so low that it is hard to launch. Hope some other people answer and have some places close by to fish.

Most of the lakes in the Lubbock area are low but still fishable. Here are the ones within about an hour of town.
Alan Henry - If you are willing to pay the fees and fight the crowds, it is a good option.
JB Thomas near Snyder - the lake is low but you can launch a boat. Crappie and catfish are good. I haven't heard much about bass lately.
White River near Crosbyton - the lake is low. We were able to launch an 18 ft flatbottom, but the motor drug bottom coming away from the ramp. Fishing is still very good for most species. Pressure is low.
Mackenzie near Silverton - the lake is low but no problem launching. Fishing for hybrid striped bass is excellent and it is a good place for crappie, catfish and bass.

Has anyone been to Buffalo Springs Lake? Went there just to find my best lake in a mess with lots of dead fish. Does anyone know what it will take for Buffalo Lake to get back on track?

We have been to Buffalo Springs and it is confirmed with golden algae. We won't be able to do anything to the lake until the kill stops. At that time we will evaluate it and determine what stocking will need to be done to speed the recovery.

What possibilities are you looking at stocking?? Has the kill gotten 100% of the fish??

I grew up in Levelland, about 35 miles west of Buffalo Springs...I'd always heard of lot's of big "sewer trout" being caught out there I'd hit A.H., just remember to bring your wallet.

We won't know the extent of the kill until we can sample. I'm not planning on sampling until I'm sure the kill is over as I will need to know the full extent of the kill, not what it was like half way through the kill. We will try to re-establish existing fisheries when restocking is started.

There is a lot of shore fishing available at White River. With the low water there is a lot more than I would like. You can access about the lower 1/3 of the reservoir from the shore. There is a variety of habitat within easy casting distance.

Charlie Munger, Is there a way to stop Golden Algae in Buffalo Springs Lake? Also, how long does it usually take for Golden Algae to die off. And,if it does stop, how long does it usually take for a lake to recover.

Charlie, I understand that you have been catching a lot of flack from people in the Pandhandle about TPW's handling of the Golden Algae problem. I just want to say that all the information you have put out on this subject on this board is greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep us informed.

We don't have any way of treating a lake for golden algae. Organisms in the wild are extremely hard to control. Think about fire ants, carp and hydrilla. In a small area you can get some control over them. On a larger scale it becomes essentially impossible.
How long it will last and how long to recover depends on a great many factors such as how fast it warms up, rainfall, sunlight (the algae doesn't like UV light), nutrients, plankton blooms, the extent of the kill, the size of fish killed, etc. We will be sampling the lake as soon as we can after the bloom to determine our course of action for recovery.

Have you tried the string of canyon lakes? I used to fish lakes 1 & 2 all the time. There is a suprising number of good sized fish in these small city lakes.
