Sorry if this is the wrong place but I've got to let some feelings out. I had to take my 12 yr old Doxie in to the vet this morning. He got up ok this morning but shortly he became very uncomfortable. He would walk a short distance and then lay over on his side. By the time we got to vet he lost the use of his front left leg and couldn't stand. Now he's lost both front and back legs are going out as well. He's got some other issues that make him a bad surgical candidate even if we tried that option. Vet says she doesn't think he could recover to any kind of quality life. Long story short I've got to put him to sleep at 4:30 this afternoon. I have to wait for my wife to get off work and meet me. I'm sitting here tearing up already. He's the last of my original pack of Dachshunds. I might have done harder things in my life but I don't remember what.
Thanks for listening

I am sorry for your loss. I have had to put one down that was 16 years old and I have the second that turns 17 this summer. I can say I have enjoyed the companionship of both the dogs.

Sorry to hear that. We had one that had back problems. They told us it was common in them.

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
My wife and I were able to spend some time with Zorro at the vets office in a private room. My daughter even called on cell phone and asked us to place it up to his ear so she could talk to him. He seemed to recognize her voice and his ears perked a little bit with a small tail wag. He was in pretty bad shape and even on medication we could tell he was suffering. We held him in a blanket and tried to comfort him as best we could. Finally we told the vet it was time. The vet was very kind and explained to us exactly what she was doing and what would happen. He already had a catheter in place so it was a simple procedure. First she gave him a very strong anesthetic which put him fast asleep in seconds, then she gave him a shot of mega barbituates which stopped his heart immediately. I was holding him and talking to him and he was gone before I knew it.
Rest well my old man. You were a good companion and a happy addition to our family. I hope you are in a place where you have found your Mom & Dad and there was a happy reunion. Enjoy the warm sun, wander where you want, and chase those lizards all day. I miss you already.
