Hey guys I just had a home inspection done for my home sale. My hot water heater used to have a timer on it. We disconnected that and spliced the wire together. The inspector said "the splice should be protected in a disconnect box". What exactly is he refering to as a disconnect box? Pictures or links would be helpful. I need to turn this back in ASAP and I am not sure if I am gonna leave it to the buyer to repair or not. Thanks.

Thats what I was thinking but the inspection said "disconnect" box. All the searches I have done looks like a circuit breaker box to me.

Go buy a disconnect box at Lowes it is less than $10. It is used for AC units and will be easy to install, besure to get romex clamps for the wire where it enters the box.

Small gray box with a disconnect handle or switch. Wires go in to the box and connect to the disconnect handle and then come out of the box to the unit. I allows you to shut off electricity to the unit. Ask him if a simple single pole light switch will work. Same concept unless you're dealing with 220.

I'll try and find a picture.

This is what it looks like. Do what Ape said and just go to Lowes or HD and ask them.

Aren't the tankless 110. Not sure. You are right about the tank heaters. Had a brain fart.

It looks like a circuit breaker, and many home inspectors see it on the outside of the house near the A/C unit and wrongly think it is a circuit breaker. The switch may have 30 or 40 written on it, but that is not referring to amps. It is simply an ON/OFF switch with no amp rating.

Cliff is right! Also they are starting to sell the plastic T-handle disconnect box. RUN AWAY!!! When you try to connect the circuit and just lightly touch the connection and pull away, it will "freak" the appliance out and cause problems. I deal with 240vac all day, and it is common with customers.
