Decided to go check out the Las Colinas Canals tonight after work, hoping to find some of those legendary, gigantic crappie that Las Colinas so prodigously produces this time of yr., and give the culvert beside the bridge, behind the fast food joint, under the streetlight, a break! Well, Got there at about 10:10 PM, dropped a jig down into the mouth of my favorite culvert to fish in those canals, and IMMEDIATELY hooked up! Only this was no crappie, he headed deep, and i mean deep into the culvert, heading towards 114! I was bent double, and could not turn him, as he stripped line against the drag! WOW! Suddenly i got that sinking, sick feeling, as the line suddenly went slack, and i thought he had broken off. Wrong! He did the next best thing--he straightened out the hook!! It was a 1/32nd oz jig head, impaled through a black/chartreuse tube jig, intended for barndoor crappie!! Black bass? maybe. Channel or blue cat? more likely! I have caught and have seen caught, some monster channels and blues here on jigs, so most likely that's what it was. Majority of bass i catch here head out to open water, cats bore deep inside culvert. But, Oh well! To be safe, i got another jig head and retooled. Well, Long story short, the bite was on! After that immediate hit, over the next 25 minutes, landed 5 LMB's, 2 dinks, and 3 between 2 and 3.5 lbs each! Here they are: Quit fishing about 10:40, so in 30 minutes, 5 fish, 3 of em pretty decent fish, I will take that any time! less than 10 minutes from my house! you can see the buildings in the background of 2 of the photos, and you can also see the footbridge spanning the canal. That spot under the footbridge, late at night is a catfish and bass freeway! Gotta love this type of fishing! Caught them to classical "chamber music" violins and oboes, I believe, in D minor! All fish were released, 2 had eggs and bellies showing, lol! Also, the purple stuff on one of the fish is pansy petals, as i slung him up into a flower bed when i got him out of the water, and he was flopping around in there all over the place! All fish caught on utlralite gear, 6 lb test, and tube jigs. For some reason, in this spot, tubes will outfish everything else, every time, for ALL species. Go figure! Good times! Rudy

Good job Rudy. I love those pics with the city lights in the background. Great fishing right in the middle of Dallas - gotta luv it!

Cool! Nice report.
I would guess that you hooked up with a carp instead of a cat. Sounds more like the way they run.

nah, have caught my share of cats there over the years, big cats, and this is a typical display they put on. that water is no more that 4-5 ft deep and the culvert gets shallower the deeper in they go. I pulled a blue out of there a few years ago, worked him all the way to the mouth of the culvert from deep in there, and when i got my hands around his head and started pulling him out, he was about 36 inches long! no idea how much he weighed, but he was a fat sonofagun.
Also KaLub caught a 14 lb 'er there one night although in open water, exhibited same type of run as the one Tuesday night

Hey robert, wait till i get you on a 7,8, 9 or bigger, lb bass, at the foot of the runways and you are literally beneath the underbelly of a Boeing 737 fuselage as it either is landing or taking off from Love Field! I have done that a time or two over the years!
Urban Fishing, nothing like it!
