Cancun sailfish are Atlantic sailfish. (half the size of Pacific sails) The ones we catch in the GOM are Atlantic sails. He most probably measured the longest length which is tip of tail to tip of bill. His fish was between 45 to 55 pounds.

The correct way to measure a billfish is from the center of the tail fork to end of lower jaw. The averarge bill of an atlantic sail extends 12" beyond the lower jaw. The tip of the tail is 9" more than the fork. So, deduct 21" from the 86" and you get a true measurement of 65". That's pretty typical of Atlantic sailfish.

I was assuming they knew how to measure the fish... HAHA Mrbill you are probably right. An 86" would be a good sail though...

State record was 97.5" and weighed 95 lbs.

No fish is too good for the grease.
