Lets say I want to go to Broken Bow lake and try and catch some walleye on fly, to have fun and get some meat! From what I hear, walleye is incredible eating.

Has anyone ever targeted walleye on fly? I am pretty sure they will take streamers fairly well, but what colors/sizes?

Edit: Found a great resource:

I have never flyfished for them but we used to kill them in Wyo on baby bass crankbaits and 4in red worms jigged on the bottom.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Swellcat was killing the walleyes up under the spillway last year.
He might be on here with some ideas.

Up in extreme north Texas I think there is. There hasn't been any walleye in my area that I know of for some time. They were stocked around here a long time ago though.

There might be some in the Tx. panhandle. The rest are for sure out of state. Yes back in the '70s TPWD stocked walleye in several Tx. lakes. Not many lived long and not many fisherman tried to catch them, and the stocking program died.

Lake Meredith just north of Amarillo has Walleye, they also have a consumption warning (not s'posed to eat the tasty rascals), I caught one there last year on a visit, the lake was 15 feet low then & its even lower now. Broken Bow in Oklahoma has Walleye also.

I have heard that Walleye are good eating. I have seen them caught on Lindner's Angling Edge, and they seem like a good fish to target, if you live by them.

They sure do. The first time I was up there I saw some really nice ones. Tried to get 'em to take what I had to offer but they laughed at me. I've never targeted them but I have eaten Walleye and they are fine eating to be sure.

Excellent eating for sure!

Never caught any on the fly, we either trolled in Lake Erie or caught ice fishing large, deep, ponds.

I grew up south of Buffalo, NY and let me tell you- Lake Erie Walleye and Yellow Perch are two of the best tasting freshwater fish there is!!! Trick is not to eat any over 5lbs... the bigger they get, the less tasty they are.

Walleye were a staple for dinner and action during our annual Canada trips.

Great tasting and plentiful

There are bead-headed nymphs with yellow bucktail feathers...the beads are large brass beads- these nymphs are designed specifically for walleye. They look suspiciously close to a yellow bucktail jig...an old standard walleye lure. You'll need to use either sinking line or lots of split shot to get to the bottom where walleye live. I know guys that have caught walleye on these types of flies...purists that want to make their life "difficult", lol.

It can definitely be done. My recommendation would be to catch them post-spawn; typically late May in shallower water when they're really on the feed and have some fun.

And yes, Walleye are delicious.
