How can I find out how/where the grease goes and where the oil goes? I hear people talking about Reel butter and how good it is for smooth casting. Any advise

Reel Butter is the best I have ever used. I used Rocket Fuel for a number of years and it is very good but no better than Reel Butter and RB is about 1/2 the price.

gears use grease and everything else I use a drop of oil. Remember it only takes a small amount of both the grease and oil. I use the ardent reel butter and rocket fuel

Quantum Hot Sauce, sparingly...too much is worse than not quite enough.

Lots of good reel oils out there. I use Yellow Rocket Fuel and Penn Reel's Synthetic Reel Oil. Also use the Abu Garcia oil and the free tube of oil you get in the box with every Shimano reel. Whatever you use, apply it sparingly.

KD had posted this a year or so ago and I wish I could apply credit to who's it is but here's a viscosity chart for some oils.

John, that chart done by Mark ? and kelley Brown aka sandman on BFHP several years ago. Mark is a chemist and rod builder and sandman probably the most knowledgeable guy about reels that I haveever met. He had forgotten more than I could ever learn. The original question about where to grease and oil, here's a saying that pretty much works-"Grease the gears, oil the bearings." Some have mentioned other products in their posts and that is fine, we use the yellow rocketfuel on bearings and havenever had any complaints from customers. On gears, we use Super Lube. Regardless of product you choose, be sure bearings are clean before using any product. We take all the parts off the reel down to frame and clean and then service with products i just mentioned. If we have a reel that is used in brackish water, we use ReelX and coat each part to prevent corrosion.
