Had a fish fry for the neighbors last night, and used some good ol' peanut oil.

How do you guys go about filtering this...have read that you can re-use this oil several times.

I tried the coffee filter last night, and took forever to strain 4 cups...and I have a gallon to filter.

Just get a regular kitchen strainer at the grocery store. I use a big one the fits my funnel. That makes it really easy to get it back in the bottle.

Somebody just told me this looked like I was saying to use google and not the board. NOPE..I was saying "I don't know nothing about it, and have been wondering the same thing. This is what I found". You know how it is in Winter, you got to nip it in the bud before it happens.

Academy sells some big filters and funnels for peanut oil. I used them on Thanksgiving to filter 4 gallons and they worked very well, but sill slow.

Academy also sells a pump that lets you pump the oil from the fryer back into the jug and filter at the same time. It's a little slow, but works well in my opinion. I used to use the big filters and funnels, but if you pour too fast (and you will), you get oil everywhere. With the pump, I can just turn it on and come back later to check on it.

As long as you store the oil in a cool place you can reuse it several times.

Let it settle good then just pour off the top 4/5 and discard the remainder. If you really want it clear, fold cheese cloth about 3 times and place it in your funnel. Works great.

IF YOU FILTER OIL (ANY TYPE) AND FREEZE IT, IT WILL REMAIN GOOD INDEFINATELY PROVIDED YOU DO NOT SCORCH IT WHILE COOKING. THAT IS THE ONLY PLUS FOR USING PEANUT OIL, THE TEMPERTURE NEEDED TO SCORCH PEANUT OIL IS HIGHER THAN ANY OF THE OTHER TYPES. I HAVE REUSED OIL 6-8 TIMES, I USE AS MUCH AS 5 GALLONS FOR SOME FISH FRYS AND IF YOU DO NOT REUSE THE OIL, IT CAN BE COSTLY.

Kelly,

The link you provided on the turkey frying recommends 3 minutes per pound. I've fried a lot of turkeys and go at least 3:30 per pound, and usually fry for 3:45. Put the turkey in the peanut oil at 350 degrees, and add heat until it gets back up to 350. The quality of the oil is not as big a deal as for fish as the fried turkey absorbs almost no oil.

Good luck!

Joe

Battery powered pump with filter from Academy works great for me.

As stated above, let the oil cool and settle first and pump out the 85% with no particles to reuse. With peanut oil, it's as good as new.

DITTO. I've fried as many as 4 turkeys in the same oil after using the Academy filter/pump.

I've used peanut oil for fish on canoe trips by just pouring it back into the container without straining. I looks terrible but the fish tasted great the third and fourth times.
Always discarded it after the trips (10 days).
I'm sure straining is better if you are storing it.

Stretch one of your wife's nylon footy stockings over the funnel and go for it...be sure to wash it and put it back in her dresser drawer, though.
