This is my first post...just found the site and love it.

I am heading to Broken Bow in a couple weeks for a weekend trip w/ one other fisherman. I am in need of suggestions regarding cheap lodging, good guides, and appropriate flies for this time of year.

Thanks in advance for any help.

How about camping? I did not stay anywhere while there but the state park campground. I have only been once, but plan to go back soon. If you do a search on Broken Bow I think Tarpon had some good ideas on what to use there.

My gosh I almost never found it. Check with Tarponfly. I bet he could guide for you.
The fly list is on that thread.

-made a couple notes on the map as well..... sorry for the clarity, it was floded up in the glove box.

now below is a link to my Photo bucket. page 4-7, on my photobucket, are pics from broken bow recently. all the pics ''are'' different fish.

wolley buggers and small midges were the ticket. WB's work almost anytime there. i tie all my flys, and i tie a fly, that no one carries. ---works everytime. droppinG a fly from an attractor is a great way to fish there as well.......

as for hotels, theres not a lot, but if i stay in a hotel, ill stay in the one with the mexican restaurant attached to it.....for the life of me, i cant remember the name..... its usually anywhere from 50-75 a night.... i prefer to camp. cheaper -and as long as its not freezing, its nice to sit by the fire and/or drive around the park at night and see all the animals.... tons of deer everywhere there-- when there are not a lot of people...... i have seen more armidillos this year than i have ever seen before. once around the park i saw more than 20... the deer are almost tame.... wont run away usually. i walk up on the all the time when im flyfishing there. woke up one moring and there were 6 in my campsite laid down....... till they saw me.
- i use 2.5 tippet during the day(floro carbon). at night i use 3.5 -4 . at night i throw WB's with lots of flash. the Hex hatch there is pretty neat too. they hatch at night and you will find them near lights. thats over though----- on my net i have a sien to dip in the water to catch insects. works great to see what they are eating. a lot easier to catch a fly in the sien and immediatly match to a fly...... lot less headache. - it does not work all the time.... sometimes nothing is hatching.... they are about 8 bucks. and they have a small carring case that velcros to your net in seconds.

The first time I went up I fished with Jesse King, who owns 3 rivers fly shop. He's quite a character and obviously knows and loves the LMF. I recommend him highly. He showed me a whole bunch of good spots and taught me a lot about the river and how to fish it. Guides are not cheap but I try to scrape up a few bucks a couple times a year to fish with one because I always learn something surprising.

We went 2 weekend ago and had a great time. I had never been up there before and will be going back for sure. We had a guide on Friday to try and learn the area since it was all new to us, but probably didn't really need him. If you know about trout fishing in general you should do pretty good there. Tippets were long and light for the best bite. I had good luck on bead head hares ear nymph size 14. Evening hole was a no brainer to catch some fish, lost creek had some nice runs that produced fish and spillway creek was kind of spotty for us. We found a few nice holes that held fish but they were few and far between. I did hook into a nice brown up there but he broke me off, 1.5lb tippet. We got a cabin in the state park, because we wanted to be close and get the whole experience rather than a motel. I would prefer camping but it was way to cold. Good luck

Make sure you have felt soles! The rocks on the Lower Mountain Fork are bigtime slick! It's like walking on greased bowling balls!!!!

Very slick down there definetly! As for a guide, I have used Tarponfly three times. Once for the sand bass run in Rowlett Creek and another 2 times in Broken Bow. Amazing guy! He will show you what to do and how to do it right. Its even fun to watch him fish. He reminds me of the guy on "Fishing Within City Limits" the fishing show. He is really intense on whatever type of fish he is after. Last October I hired him, and we wnt into Bevers Bend Fly Shop to grab some extra tippit. Sid said not many fish were being caught that day, but I had over 15 rainbows by noon. Like I said, hes a great guide! He also sells his flys for $1.50 a piece. The fly shops dont carry it. He got the fly pattern from the Green River in Utah, and brought it to BB. It catches the heck out of the trout there.

The guides around here fish while they are guiding? -- That is unusual, but you sound as though you were well taken care of and happy with the experience and learned some things.

It's a secret Kelly, and if Tarponfly told you then he would have to kill you.
