Step-son and I decided to get out today and give the bluegill a try at Fairfield, a little breezy, but had a blast! We managed 25 or so 9 1/2- 10 1/2 giant gills!!! (the fish basket was full and heavy too) caught a 4lb channelcat to boot, all but a couple caught on crickets, the others on worms, fished in 8-14 ft of water. First time down to Fairfield since last summer and I will say this, if the water gets any lower you will not be able to launch (the ramp by the dining hall is high and dry and not usable and the back ramp is getting iffy) All that said we had a SUPER blessed day on SUPER Sunday.

I was there sunday also, you are correct about the ramp. Hopefully they will start putting some water in the Lake from the trinity river. Where you coming in about 5:00, smaller boat? I had fished the warm water cove and had done well on reds and cast netted a bunch of Talapia. If you don't mind me asking where you back up in the timber (other side of the boat ramp that can't be used)? I would love to get my daughter on some of those bluegill.

speckman 37, I dont know about Gander mountain, but my guess would be no. jcarring99 are you talking about the bait store at I-45 & fm1126 I dont think they sell them there have not stopped there in a while. This I do know I get them at Petco or Petsmart(I always get the largest ones they have,I paid like $4 for 3 dozen), there also is the bait store by Ray Hubbard named Fishermans supply they are a little cheaper than pet stores but not as conveinient. You can also order them from suppliers but you have to buy them by large quanities,TFF member Mason could help you with that one he had like several thousand at last years breambuster fish fry. I would also suggest you get a cricket tube or cage(they sell them at Walmart, I have the tubes and they work good and I just take it with when I go to the petstores for bait.) Hope this helps.

When you guys target bluegill on Fairfield and you are fishing in 8 foot of water - are there standing timber you are fishing? What are you guys targeting. I have mainly fished for brim in shallow waters - of course most of the brim has been the smaller ones.
Just curious

I've caught bluegills on FF in shallow (2-3 ft) water (in the reeds when there were some reeds - years ago) and deeper (10 feet at the dam). There is some timber on the south end of the lake and I'll bet there are some big bluegills down that way too.
