I am pretty heavy into bass fishing but enjoy going for other species every now and then. I haven't caught many crappie and just looking to improve my technique and skills a little . I have 2 ultralights that I usually use 6 lb test, 1 split shot, a gold hook, and a live small to medium minnow. I would guess that not every one uses live minnows. What type of jigs or other lures should I try, any specific colors or brands. The area that I fish is about 30 feet deep. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to wonderful world of crappie fishing. Hand tied jigs are very good, ThumpIt Jigs and Jigum Jigs both are very good. On Plastics I like the tube jigs from Mid South Tackle Co. and the solid body Rocky Top Jigs from Finny Tribe. I have a lot of luck with many colors and a lot of time color is not that big of factor. Down in your area the spawn should be coming up very soon.

A Kentucky rig will be easy to use with your current Bass equipment.
Use a standard baitcast reel rigged with 10-17 lb test. Fish a #2 hook rigged above a 1 oz. bell sinker. Be sure to keep a finger on the line for feel. This allows you to get the bait deeper quicker and is really sensitive.

All of the jigs that Cliff said are right on! I also do very good on Panfish Assassins.

Cool! I am a little hesitant to use the baitcaster. The area that I am fishing is really close to docks, so I kind of like using the short ugly stick UL rods. But am always willing to experiment so I'll give it a go. What about the sensitivity with a baitcaster, would you recommend florocarbon. Floro tends to help me indicate the light bites, but do you want the stretch of mono so that it is less likely to tear the crappies mouth?
As far as color for jigs, what are some good choices?
Thanks for all of the info and jig recommendations. This is going to help me out a exponentially. I have been reading a lot of the old post and that is a helpful too. Feel free to keep the info coming.

I love Chartrues the best, when that doesnt work I go opposite with a dark brown or black even. I suggest starting with a small selection of colors. Most of the time color isnt nearly as important as location and technique. Good Luck
