Thanks NTF -- good overview.

I've never held a note on any of my boats, but don't the lenders require a certian ammount of coverage on the boats they're ussing as colateral?

Just my .02, I insure with the same folks that have my house and 3 cars. There is a Huge discount there. I've had 2 fiberglass hull issues on Toledo Bend and one Lower unit 2 skag plate/lower unit issues in 5 years. Never the 1st problem with a claim. In my case it's State Farm but multi-insurance is a good motivator for an insurance company not to give you the run around.

Good Luck

Replacement cost policies cost much more (Progressive was double my policy cost when I shopped around) and how many of us total a boat in our lifetimes? For the most part we are all looking at a LU, clunk in the Gelcoat, Etc...

My replacement cost policy was only $80 a year more than an actual value policy.

You need to talk to a different agent.

I have Progressive and I made two claims in a 6 month period of time. One was a totaled Skeeter for 15000.00 and the other was a repair on a Ranger at 10000.00. No questions asked. They paid up quick both times and never batted an eye. I was expecting my rates to go up at renewal, but they went down. Something to consider when getting that cheap insurance is, how will they be when it comes to claim time?

I agree with the comments about getting your agent to help, but in my case, I purchased my insurance over the internet. Big mistake on my part, but I have learned my lesson on that. I do have to disagree about 30 days being a reasonable timeframe. There is no way it should take more than a couple of weeks. All the adjuster has to do is go look at the damage, write up an assessment, get approval and send a check.

Yes, it took closer to 40 days for my claim. It really burns me up that part of that time was waiting for someone that had no idea what he was doing. Also under no circumstances is it acceptable for the adjuster not to keep me informed of the status of my claim and there is also no excuse for not returning phone calls.

I will just chalk it up to lessons learned and take my boat and all three vehicles somewhere else. I may be slow on the uptake sometimes but when I find out I am not getting decent value or service for the money I pay, I know it is time for me to move on.

I am hearing good things about Farm Bureau.

In response to your reply, (see my previous post for details of my case)

For full disclosure I am an insurance agent that represents Progressive along with most of the other carriers mentioned in the posts. There are claim horror stories associated with each and every company no matter the line of coverage. One of the most important things is to have a good relationship with your agent and let them know immediately if things are not going the way you think they should. All carriers will depreciate the cost of the parts but that is negotiable as to the percentage.

As to the gentleman who was not satisfied with his claim results. You need to contact your agent and get him/her to help. You can also file a complaint with Texas Department of Insurance. As for the time frame of the settlement, a claim settled in 30 days is not that long of a time period. I know yours happend to be closer to 40 but with the holidays that time frame is not out of line. Of course the sooner the better but sometimes that is not always possible.

If I can help anyone please feel free to give me a call. 940.683.4008.

Jared

I appreciate the advice BUT

The Texas Dept of insurance did nothing, since they did pay a claim. They don't quibble about the amount, just whether you get your claim paid. I would be happy to post their reply. The adjustor is a bass angler and friend, and the claims division of Progressive paid him no mind. I got screwed, and would have cost me a fortune in legal fees to litigate. If the adjustors and upper mgmt. have you as a potential to be a questionable claim, they will lay it to you here in the east TX region. Mind you my claim was seen by my mechanic at East TX marine and he supports my position, as he showed me the damage to the prop shaft, and the prop was obviously impacted, not to mention the hole in the housing where the pinion went through after the gears exploded on impact. I did everything right, Told insurance commisioner of the issues, told my agent who went to bat for me, and posted this all over the internet( I didn't know of this site or it would have been a hot topic). I have others in the area, (who I can likely get to post if you don't believe me), Who have dealt with this adjustor on boats and 4 wheelers( my preachers stolen 4 wheelers ), and had [censored] decisions forced on them. I stand by the facts. And I agree, any company can do this. It just happens that progressive did it this time. Nuff said. STEVE T

That depends on how much your over all policy is doesn't it. Replacement with Progressive was $427 and my policy with USAA is $243 ($30K value). I'll ask again - what are the odds you total your boat? I'd say well less than a 1% chance - right?

I use Veritas insuarance. Out of California. they specialize in marine and rv insurance. They were $300 less than progressive w/more coverage. My Skeeter dealer recommended them.
