i have a mercury on my boat, and it tends to make the boat swim pretty good.
based on the 2 boats that you have get the bigger motor so you can go faster.

I have no opinion on the brands, but if you're going to spend money on a new boat & motors, get the 4-stroke. If nothing else, you'll never again have to buy a gallon of 2-cycle oil.

as between the two, go with yamaha only because its a newer engine and has less hours. by the way, i have a mercury which has never had mechanical issues at all whatsoever, 8 years runnin strong.

BTW the 4 stroke Mercury engines prior to the Verado were made by others, Yamaha made most of them, Mercury did mount them on their own mid/lower unit. When I replaced my Pro-Max with the Yamaha I sold over $7,000 worth of used parts, there seems to be a big demand for them.

Mercury will beat the Yamaha in all performace measures but only by a small margin. The Merc won't be as quiet and it pollutes more. Both are good motors though. Fuel savings on the Yamaha vs Merc is neglible.

The whole "Which Motor is Better" between Yammies and Merc's, and all other motors, is a matter of opinion. I think that motors that have been made in recent years are much more durable than those built in the early 90's and back. I don't think you can go wrong with either motor, but I will say to make sure you get them checked out before buying. Good luck Minh and sorry to hear you have to get a new boat. i guess that tow I gave you was the last voyage.

A doctor freind of mine just retired at 55. I asked him how and he said.........
One Wife
One House
One Yamaha
Good lesson to learn!
My Yamaha has a billion inland and offshore hours on it since 1995.Rebuilt the carbs twice(myself),two water pumps, and about 5 sets of plugs later she still runs pretty good. I have had the lower unit worked on twice but that was self inflicted damage.

It is like Chevy and Ford but since I have had my Yamaha 4 stroke I love it. NO SMOKE, QUITE, STARTS WHEN IT IS COLD, NO MORE 2 CYCLE OIL, NO FOWLED PLUGS and it gets good gas milage, I do not know if it is better then another motor as far as Merc but I am very pleased will it

Ditto to what JV said, I'm a Yamaha 4-stroke owner since 2001 with no problems, starts right up every time. Bought it at West Boats & take it to them once a yr. for upkeep.

Yammy. However, If I was going to a new motor, I think I'd have to go for an E-Tech

Those E-Tech are pretty cool. I have a place right down from the Ranger factory and when I was there at Christmas I noticed that most of the new Rangers sitting in the ready lot had E-Tecs on them.

Yep I agree, both are good motors. What is the groups opinion on Merc's Verado? Performance, cost, reliability?

I've had both and I'd take the Yamaha everytime now.
