My bro and I were in Galveston about a year ago. We were fooling around, trying to catch crab with shrimp, and all of the sudden, my bro says "Whoa, a stingray!", so I stuck my bait on front of it just for fun. GULP! The stingray had gotten my hook! My bro went to get my dad so he could help, but before they got there the line broke. It was fun trying to catch it though, and it's the only thing I've hooked that my bro hasn't. Well just goes to show ya, never try to bring a 3 foot long stingray (including tail) with 14 lb test!

Must have been 100 years ago, when I was a kid, my dad and I were fishing on the jetties at Corpus when my dad hooked into a healthly sized sting ray. To my eyes this was the biggest fish since the whale grabed old Jonah and seemed as big as our kitchen table. That episode really stuck in my mind.

Your post got me thinking about what equipment he probably had. Was some green braided line, a gauranted to birds nest bait casting reel, and a fiberglass rod.

Have been awed by them things ever since.

I cuaght one almost 3 feet across back in the 80's at Port Aransas. Actually landed it on the pier. Pretty good work since I was using a Zebco 202 combo with 10 lb. test. Funny, That reel never worked right again!

Last October my sister in law caught 6 in a row out of PM. Only thing she caught that day. Good for laughs.

When I was about 10 my dad took us fishing in the bay out of Brownsville all the time. We had a wooden boat and that summer we were catching 5 to 10 small stingrays every trip. Pop would
pull them up to the transum take a small hand ax and chop the tails off then cut the line and let them go. By the end of summer we were catch several with bobbed tails.

I am waiting for the day I am working the flats for redfish and accidentally hook a stingray on a flyrod. That oughta be a heck of a fight.

This was our biggest to date. The barb was right at 7.5" long. Pulled the barb, then released.

Holy #*@^! That's a bigun'. Some people keep them and use the wing meat. It tastes like scallops!

We caught one a little smaller than that one and used most of it for shark bait. I've heard about the scallops, but never tried it. Maybe the next one....
