I would go with the 4 stroke Yamaha, it will be less expensive to operate and their reputation for durability precedes them. The 2 stroke will give a better hole-shot. Varner has that engine on his boat and it does a good job for him.

I'd go with the Four Stroke. I run a Suzuki and I love it.

I won't get into who makes the better motor, but I have the Yamaha F115 on my SX180 Skeeter and its been great. I'd never go back to a 2 stroke.

Definitely Yamaha 4-stroke - fuel efficient, very very quiet.
Definitely NOT Mercury (this is coming from one who's Mercury has seen a lot of shop time).

My first boat was a 2-stroke and my current boat is a 4-stroke. I like the 4 much better. Better on gas, much quieter, easier oil change like a car. Man I need to do more fishing, my 04' 4-stroke only has 150 hrs on it Now is great time to buy a boat Minh. I saw some great deals. Will call you later today to talk more Most folks generally inquire more about the boat first then maybe the engine. But you went straight to the motor, the more important part IMO

I would rather have a Mercury 4 stroke, but between those two motors I would go with the 4 stroke Yamaha. The fuel economy will outweigh any negatives.

It seems to me that Mercury carries such a market share due to how the motors are pushed at major outlets (Tracker, etc). My dad tried to get me to buy the Mercury, but his has to be fixed fairly frequently.
I've got a Yamaha 2-stroke on my Alumacraft and like it so far, though it's only a year old.
Take a kid fishing!

My dad has a Yamaha that has been nothing but problems too. I have both engines, but if I had a choice of which brand I would buy the Mercury. My 2000 Merc Opti 225 has had a bazillion hours put on it without mechanical failure. The only reason I have a Yamaha is that the boat was used and too good of a deal to pass up. Buying new, I always buy American made products if there is an option.
