I went fishing for the first time last week in East Texas with a friend. I slammed the truck door on his rod, sux. We were out fishing for Crappie and wanted to get him a replacement rod. As I know almost nothing about fishing, I need some advice. The lake is has the usual stock, mostly Crappie, Bass, Catfish etc so wanted to get him something that works for most. I also wanted something discounted. What do you think of these?

Well those are sort of specialized rods for crappie. They are longer and lighter than most. I'm not saying they won't reel in a bass or a cat, but you'll be in for a fight! These types of rods are made for 2-6 pound test. A good general rod would maybe be like a 6-7 ft medium action rod. They'll catch just about anything. You give up some feel and length for the crappie, but they will still catch them and have enough backbone to pull in a bass or any other "sea kittens"! wink

Dicks has a Shimano Sedona 2500 reel and on a 7 foot shimano rod clearanced this week for 34.95. Its a great deal and you could pretty much fish for anything with that set-up.

Is that what your buddy wants? Or does he want the one you broke replaced? Many of us are very personal with the type of rod we use.

The bottom one looks more fit for crappie and the top one looks better for bass and cats. That Shimano that BDB mentioned should work best for everything.

Sorry to hear about the rod. Here's to hoping it was not very expensive. Replacing the rod is a great idea and you sound like a stand-up guy for doing it.

Thanks for all the help. I'm going with a 7' Medium 2 piece, something like this http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores...0002000_100-2-2

A friend of his told me the rod I broke was a Zebco $20 rod (which I tend not to believe, considering my first fishing camping trip was all about ragging on the green horn), so something better will do the trick.

WillieFindum Here,
If it was me, I would want a gift card. Then I could just replace the rod or use the card to upgrade.
