To increase your distance...

Learn to use conventional tackle (instead of spinning gear). There are lots of options, but I like the Tica rods and the Daiwa reels.

LOnger rods with smaller line gets the distance your looking for. So you need to find what works for the tipe of fishing your doing. I use to fish 20 lb line in the surf but after being spooled to many times I use 40# now.

Look into the new avet MC line. Charkbait assures me that there will be a left hand version forthcoming very shortly.

The only complaint I can make, AT ALL, with my avets was the lack of cast control(without the main drag being involved). They freespool THAT well! There built like tanks to, maybe a more solid design than my old penns...

True, but I have also had experiences with sharks, where it didn't matter what test line I had. If the drag system on the reel is just average and not great, they still spool ya anyways.

No I'm talking total you cant stop the fish even with your hands. We both now it takes a big shark to do that. Could have been big Jacks. Who knows?
Wish they would have bit on my 14/0 Pinn.

I use both conventional and spinning reels at the coast and have the best luck with my conventional reels loaded with 60# braid (power pro) and a 60# 2-4' red wire leader. The braid cast much better and farther for me than mono does.

Just my 2 cents

Mason,

You are welcome to dislike conventional tackle all you want. I promise that you don't dislike conventional tackle as much as I dislike spinning gear.

You asked how to get more distance and in general conventional tackle will cast farther than spinning. Check the records!

My current surf rigs are a Tica 11' 3-8oz. rod with a Daiwa SealineX 30SHV loaded with 50# PowerPro and a Tica 11'6" 4-10oz. rod with a Daiwa SealineX 40HV loaded with 80# PowerPro. (I've also got an old 12' rod build on a Herter's blank with a Penn Squidder that casts just as far, but is much harder to control.) With any of these rigs I can reliably cast appropriate weights 100yds. (Measured on dry land, not just estimated in the surf.)

I didn't make any modifications to the rods or reels (although I disassembled, cleaned and relubed the reels). The newer rigs are very easy to cast and fish very well. You could buy either of the Tica/Daiwa rigs for under $300.

Seems like a pretty easy way to increase your casting distance (by almost 50%).

Cheers,
Kelly McCoy

Of course I did. No excuse other than temporary recto-cranial inversion.
