Does anyone eat these fish? If so what way? Fillet, or whole? Never had them or heard of anyone who has.

Some people use hard heads for shark bait but only if nothing else is available.

Fillet the gafttops, be sure to get all the red meat off. I have lots in the freezer.

I had to try hardheads while in Port Mansfield in 2007. We caught a number of large ones. I did a little on line research, and found they were claimed to be quite tasty. Biggest problem is the small fillet size. I don't make a practice of keeping them, but if I didn't have fish, and wanted some, I sure wouldn't hesitate to eat some more.

That's a great picture above...the distinctive "sail" on the Gaftop is their best identifying feature and yes they are very good eating if cleaned and prepared properly...no so with hardheas.

3un Thanks for the picture. That really does help a whole lot. Can't wait to sink my teeth into some gaftops now that I know how they look and most importantly is that they are good to eat!

Gafftops are good to eat, but be catious where you catch them. TP&W has a Mercury warning in Galveston for Gaftops.
