Looking to plan a trip with some buddies for a kayak flats fishing trip.

Where to go and when to go is the questions.

Any suggestions.

Aransas Pass. Stay in Rockport if you want, or, eat there for sure. Port Aransas is on the gulf side-- no flats there. Galveston is muddy.

Go in June - September. You don't want to mess with spring winds down there.

Definitely Rockport for Kayak Fishing. Lots of great areas.

The lighthouse lakes area, about halfway between the flats and port aransas. it's really really shallow, about 6" deep. There are giant masses of redfish everywhere, we saw 20+ schools of redfish, each easily containing more than 500 bulls and less than 100' from the boat.

I have a tank of fish in my basement... if it were up to me, I would let them loose in my pool so I could fish in my backyard!

Yeah Cole for sure the Port A area and the Corpus area have some killer flats fishing, sight casting for schooled reds and the occasional monster speck. If you are thinkin about getting a guide or talking to some locals (besides me) I'd get in contact with JerryB's Kayaks (they have a website, same name). They are great people who can point you in the right direction and if you lose/break an accessory or punch a hole in your 'yak Jerry will fix you right up. Jerry is also one of the organizers of the Laguna Madre Flyfishing Club out of Corpus (of which I am a member) and we have plenty of great people who would probably be willing to take y'all to some spots or at least point you in the right direction, myself included. fish

I am heading to Port O'Connor on the 19th with bay boat and kayak. Got some many places to go there I can't count them all!
In the fall we fished Army Hole and clobbered the trout, caught redfish in Grass Island (really - IN Grass Island!), hooked a jack in Pass Cavallos and landed a Cobia.

If you go to Aransas, do a night paddle after 9 p.m. from Hampton's landing and go inland into the housing area (left from the boat ramp). Tie on a clouser sith a bead head and throw it into the green lights - you will see what I mean! laugh
Just keep the deck of you Yak as clean as possible and you will need a net - lots of times.

I'll be in Port A this next week. I'll likely fish the Lighthouse Lakes and maybe B&R. I'll try and remember to post a report when I get back to Dallas. I've always had decent luck in that area but to be honest it is the only flats I've fished so take that with a grain of salt.

Rockport, Port A is your best bet. If Jerry B can't help you, check in with Dean at Slowride in Aransas Pass.
The flats are real skinny right now, so ask around before you commit to one flat or another.

That is for sure, I went to a flats area this morning in a kayak and instead of the 2' deep flat that I expected there was a whole lot of mudflat exposed. Went to Plan B and caught plenty of fish, but that is certainly a word to the wise, spiny norman.

A Guide on TKF was showing pics last week of a Red basically mudbogging in LHL. No water, just swimming through the mud!

I will be down there the first week of April, how do the deeper flats like Estes look?

The reds were tailing up shallow today, I stalked and hooked up on several in the Lighthouse Lakes area. Tons of fun. They seemed really skittish though and it took a lot of casts on a fish's nose for them to eat.
