Getting ready to install the NMEA 2000 network and it was highly recommended that there be a minimum of three feet between the antenna and the graph. Reason was because of antenna burning out caused by the proximity of the two together. Anyone have information on this? Couldn't find any info on the Lowrance web site.

Was wanting to put the GPS module on the bow, between the TM and the front console graph.

yes, you need mount it at least 2-3ft way from the head unit.

There have been many posts about it. Some say you have to keep the seperate from each other while others don't seem to have a problem with them close. I put my on the back end of the boat and the main unit next to the console (Just to be safe). I haven't had any problems. you might look at the top post in this topic area. the title looks like this... Lowrance software/issues with your unit? It has some really good info in it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. Guess I'll just mount the antenna behind the drivers seat.

First-hand experience here. I put my antenna on an adaptor that attached to the Ram that my LX-27c was mounted on. Bad idea. Kept losing the signal. Moved the antenna two feet forward on the gunwhale and haven't lost a signal since.

I also have first hand experience with the puck location. If you mount the puck to close to the unit, it may fry the puck. I had mine mounted about 2 feet from the unit and now have it mounted at the back of my boat. I went through three pucks before realizing what the issue was. Linda at Lowrance worked with me until the problem was resolved. I hope it stays that way smile

I will be calling Linda on Monday. My set up worked fine until I moved the puck closer to the unit to clean up the installation...now my GPS does not work. Oh well...wish I would have read this sooner!!!

On my LMS 520 I mounted the antenna 6 inches from the unit and have had ZERO problems. Mythbusters need to work on the 3 feet thing. LOL

Seriously, what's it going to do? I was on the phone with Lowrance this week and asked the question about "why does being closer than 3' fry the puck" to which I was told "it does not". If I have 12' to 15' of cable connected between the antenna and the head unit, how would the head unit "know" where the gps antenna is?

The Lowrance tech I spoke with said that on the newer pucks the cone angle of reception needs to be clear of obstructions, which is where the 3' rule comes from.

I understand that Medic probably knows more about this than most of us combined. But being an engineer, I'd like an explanation of why something does or does not work.
