I talked with one of our local pool guys and he's almost positive he can get white pool noodles which would alleviate the need to paint. Once I get confirmation I'll get the info out for you guys interested.

If any one has a line on pool noodles in the Dallas area, please post up. I just started trying to find some this evening and it not the time of year to be buying them I guess.
The float itself does not have to be white. The device with the name and date markings on it has to be white. I use "jugs" made from pool noodles of various colors and a small "tag jug" made from a 16oz soda bottle with my name , etc. attached to it. I was not clear and took it by TPW and got it confirmed. Mainly they want to be able to read it without disassembly or hunting for the date. They emphasised make the date the most prominant writing if possible. If they see a date that is within limits, they don't even check the name unless they have a reason to suspect something foul. Also if you use similar (possibly distinctive) jugs in a particular set, they will only check a couple. Saves them time.
I chase jugs from a kayak and when it gets busy, it is like a chinese fire drill.

I use the ones made by mudcatflaggingjugs.com. They are the coolest thing I've ever seen for jug fishing. They're easy to tie off and fish at any depth. He suggests using a one pound dumbell from Academy (.99 cents). I use the one pound weight except when I bait with live perch and then I use 6 pound window weights. When a fish gets on, they stand upright. Check 'em out. I'd never go back to plastic bottles.
I'm gonna check out the colored jug thing. I don't think that info is accurate. I'm not sure. I'm just curious about the wording of the Rule.

talkeed to game warden on this, The rule says entire device has to be white. Game warden i talked to said that as long as i try to make it all white he is not gonna give me any problems. I asked about using like a wrap of diff color tape on top for ID purposes, he said that is not really legal but he doubted that any warden would write u a ticket for it

Sorry for the confusion. The blue text below is a direct quote (copy and paste from the regs on juglines) as published on TP&W site: "Tagging and Marking Requirements:
Must be used with a valid GEAR TAG (see Definitions) attached within 6 inches of the free-floating device; gear tag is valid for 30 days after the date set out and must include the number of the permit to sell nongame fish taken from fresh water, if applicable. Properly marked buoys or floats qualify as valid gear tags.
For non-commercial purposes, a jugline must be marked with a white, free-floating device. " The marking device (tag) must be white. not necessarily the free floating device. There is no exclusion of multiple floatation devices. Just that the marker must be free floating and white. This makes the white 16 oz. plastic bottles legal and easier for the wardens to read. I am priveleged to visit with game wardens and TP&W officials on a very regualar basis from the lakes to Austin and have no desire to gamble at all or miss-direct anyone. Do what you are comfortable with. I use a white free floating marker jug behind my loudly colored noodles and have been checked / photographed, published and filmed doing it. The address etc. is permanently visible from the inside of the bottle. I print it on my printer, roll it up and insert in bottle and fill with foam. I use a nylon snap tie around the neck of the bottle to attach it to the tag line behind the noodle at about 4". The date set is put in large print on white duct tape around the exterior. If the whole assembly is taken for a ride through brush or other structure, most of the components will slide right through without the cat getting hung on something to get leverage on. link to the TP&W web page quoted: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/fish/legal_devices/Tight lines :-)

Carver, your post is completely confusing.
The regulation is simple, don't overcomplicate it.

The mudcat flagging jugs are great. I assume he is still selling them. If not, you can make them yourself using the swim noodles and then wrapping them in white duct tape. I foget how much he charges for them, but they were very reasonably priced when I used to buy them. I always put a piece of reflective tape around the top of the pcv tube and have never had any trouble with the law on this. When the jug flags, the tape is easy to see day or night.

divingcat, Those jugs are still available at www.mudcatflaggingjugs.com for $4 each. At least that was the price about six months ago. I love 'em.

This is what Austin office of TP&W told me about the noodles, jugs, colors etc.
"as long as the last thing on the line is a white free floating device with requred owner and date markings, the noodles or other jugs down the line don't matter as long as you do not use orange. Any orange on the jug or device marks it as commercial."
I sent a photo of my "jugs" and they pointed out that some of my noodles had a Peach colored tint to it that might be considered as orange by some, but that was the only thing they saw potentially wrong. I'll be replacing those Peach colored noodles with white if I can find them.
I hadn't seen the engraved tag like the photo posted above. I like the looks of that a lot.

I got a Brother P-TOUCH battery powered lable maker for Christmas this year. I dated some of my jugs earlier this week and the lables stayed on and didn't show any signs of soaking off. The true test will be a longer soak in the lake repeated times. It looks promising & it is easy. Office Depot had them on sale for $9.95 its the printer tape that cost but if it makes labling and dating jugs easer I am glad I have one.
