Just came into your forum and I want to get to salt water! I have a pontoon that I use at my local lake for fishing the fresh water. It's my first boat so I was wondering if it would be ok take into salt water? It's got a Mercury 2 stroke 50 HP. If so what would I need to do to maintain. I'm telling you boat or no boat I'm getting down there soon. I go once a year to Goose Island but I would really like to explore now that I own a boat if I could. Thanks Gents!

Well you're kind of cut off from the shallows as far as running them may i suggest a ladder you can probably get shallow enough to wade into better flats in that boat. T
Right now though i'd bring it down to fish the deeper holes fish tend to school up this time of year in them especailly when the weathers been real cold.
Maintance is just wash it and repeat make sure there's no saltwater left on it freshwater is your friend now for your whole boat. Also make sure to get some rabbit ears to run fresh water through your motor you can buy the stuff to run through there but my dad has just run fresh water for years through them along with everyone i know and they last a good long time. Take off the motor cap and get some 226 or something that is a corrosion protectant but is safe for plastic. wd40 can eat up plastic. spray down the whole motor under the cap and make sure to spray down your hitch grease your hubs and motors till it pushes all the water out keeps things from locking up. Anything else you need to know don't hesitate to ask i have been doing all the cleaning on my dads boat for a long time and know a few tricks

Me and some buddies fish out of a pontoon boat in the Galveston bay area. It does a real good job of getting us on the fish. Here's a pic of us at the North Jetty catching some Redfish. And, the advice given above is good advice. Anyhow, the pontoon will serve you well. I know we enjoy fishing from one.

you can always pull it out of the big water and take off to the house and find a lake and relaunch and run it around for a few minutes. just make sure you grease and lube everything from the trailer up

Since you are familiar with Goose Isle State Park .... here's a game for ya to use your pontoon boat in that area:
Launch at Sea Gun Marina - just south of Goose Isle State Park and go under middle of the causeway - like the shrimp boats do - and head to Lap Reef., find edges of shell to apex where it can be can be 6 - 8 ft. and hard shell, anchor up and start catching. Or head S and hit the wells ~ 1 - 2 miles away with shell pads 8 - 10 ft. deep.
Or you can always use it to hit a wade fishing spot to fish the shallows and sloughs.
Good Luck and have FUN !!
