Thinking of getting a diesel. What is considered break-in milage and what is considered high milage for a diesel moter.

yea thise cummings are work horses. 400k miles is darn near impossible on a gas engine.

It's hard to say on the high end. The better question is how well was the motor maintained. If they are properly maintained, they will last for 100's of thousands of miles.

buffaloman - gas is cheaper to fill up, but if you are pulling a load, the improved mileage of a diesel more than makes up for the difference. My old gas truck mileage would drop by almost 1/2 depending on how heavy the load was and how fast I was driving. My diesel has only about a 1 MPG decrease when pulling.

i run the amsoil dual bypass filter setup and know this its not in the manuals , diesels require special antifreeze which has tio be supplimented with a additive about once a year to prevent pitting in cylinder outer walls

04 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 HO diesel. Summer w/ AC runnig all the time 18 normal driving, 19-20 on long trips. Now with winter here, i am getting a bit over 20. Just rolled 174k miles. Checked it when I filled up earlier. Pulling, the boat, 1-2 mph decrease. Oh yeah, I drive like a bat out of hades.

buy a cummins you will not go wrong with that motor but i will tell you that the 5.9L is a better motor. then the new 6.7. anyone have questions about that particualur truck feel free to pm me.

i can garantee you if you buy a diesel you will not go back to a gas

i drive a o5 dodge 4 door long bed dually with a cummins and a 6 spd manual. mine has 60k miles I get about 16 or 17 miles per gallon. Its also has a lot of welding equipment in the back. Cummins are definately built for the long haul.

2001 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 HO diesel, 6 speed manual transmission. 120,000 miles. My mileage is 15-16 in town, 17-18 highway empty, and around 13 with a 6,500 pound cab-over camper and pulling my boat at 70 MPH. Up a hill. With a 45 MPH headwind. This truck is a tank. Literally. I could push a school building off it's foundations with the thing.

The Dodge part of it isn't anything to brag about. The Cummins part is. And does anyone know how manufactures the 6 speed manual transmission? I had the clutch changed a year ago and my mechanic had to go borrow a different floor jack that could handle the weight of the thing. He said he has never seen a transmission like that in a non-commercial vehicle. Same thing with the differentials. They look like they came off a tractor.
