That would be a nutria. Here is a little info to shed some light on the little rascal:
Nutria
They remind me of muskrats.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Thanks Derik! Very interesting info. I have never heard of Nutria's. After reading all the facts from the website, there's no doubt, that's what it is. Again, thanks!

Go get a few paw traps and start leaving them around then dens when you find them. That is the tried and true method.

It's more than the catfish would do.

Girl-Luvs2Fish,

It's really important to your pond to get rid of those creatures by whatever method you can and as soon as you can. They can do incredible damage to the pond dam with their tunnels, even to the point of weakening it so much it gives way.

Almost always more than one, but killing one or more may encourage the others to move on. Mostly come out at night but sometimes late afternoon.

The books say they don't eat fish, but Nutria have never read those books. Bad news in your pond!

I see at least one of those on the SA River every time I go. I heard they tunnel the heck out of a dam.

Watch out for beavers too! They are all around. My good friends pond was almost ruined because of them burrowing in the dam. They had to get the water level lowered so they could trap them and repair the dam. I was amazed how many there were and how big they were. The thought at first they had nutria but after the 1st one was trapped they knew better. No nutria, all beavers.
