About time to get some serious protection plans for this fish!

Who are they protecting this fish from?

Its more of a what than it is a who. Overharvesting.

I see. Just seems like to me that if they were going to manage the population of these fish by limiting harvest they would do it on a water body basis rather than a state wide law. Thats what we do with bass, crappie, catfish, etc...

Actually the state provides minimum restrictions for the species you named and the water body authorities can, and sometimes do, increase those restrictions depending on conditions specific to them. This would be the same for alligator gar.

Why fix something that's not broke?

No I am no biologist, but I spend alot of time on various rivers and can guarantee you there is nothing wrong with the population of these fish.

How many 7'+ Gator Gar do you see exactly? Because that is the target of the whole thing. I promise if TPWD thinks it is necessary that means they have done their research! Real biologist doing real research! Sorry to jump on you but you obviously discount TPWD opinions. Not?

I'm not here to argue, I'm stating the facts. I know for a fact that I've seen more gator gar in the areas I fish this year than I've ever seen in the past. There are certain areas on the Trinity that they actually overpopulate the needlenose gar..If they are hurting then why can I go up a creek and see literally thousands of juvenile gator gar?

I'll see you guys at the meeting. Have a nice day smile

It is always the same argument.

"I saw a bunch of them so there must be too many"

which always brings us to:

"the plural of anecdote is not fact".

your "certain areas of the Trinity" is just that. TPWD's biologists are looking at the entire state, and the fate of these fish in other states and trying to stop (or at least slow down) what has happened there.

Because if you wait untill it is broke , it takes a lifetime to get it fixed.

Texas Coastal fisherman may never see a goliath grouper,
in the 60's, 400 lbers were common in Texas waters.
