Fished the Guad with Alex on Friday and all we caught were two little channel cats and one gill. I think it will be alot better after they stock again. Did see a couple trout rise to about a s1ze 22 midge(which was a fly I didnt have with me . I think they stock next week.
It's more than the catfish would do.

Better luck next time. Too bad y'all didn't get a mess of fish. I have those days quite a bit though, and I get skunked more than I should too.

the flys we saw around were trico midges and yes they were tiny. We also saw adult cadis and bwo's in about a 16 or 18. So right now those would definitly be the go to flys. For the new stocking you could probably throw an empty hook, or so iv been told.
I dont mind getting skunked, however no trout can make for cranky fisherman; watch out dispenser's everywhere. lol

I was in the Hill Country this past week and while I didn't fish the Guad, I talked with several people who had. The water is low, unusually clear, and the fish are very spooky. (Maybe it's those ospreys overhead that make them nervous.)
My sources had slow fishing, but several caught trout, to 21", on small flies, long leaders, and gentle presentations. Egg patterns and midges were the flies of choice.
Conditions will begin to change as the stockings occur. TPWD stocks seven times in December and January.

A Blue-Winged Olive. It's a small mayfly that hatches almost all winter. The name is quite descriptive, since the flies typically have an olive body and blue-gray wings. They can vary in size from size 16 to 24 or so. On the Guad, good patterns to use when fish are keying on BWOs are RS-2 or WD-40 nymphs around size 18-20. RS2 pattern: http://home.att.net/~ferenc/Tie-rs2.htm WD-40 pattern: http://www.americanflyfishing.com/retail/common/tieit/pattern.asp?store_id=212&id=119

Oh well I have heard of a Blue Winged Olive. I did not realize some people use a short name for it with initials. I think I have one in my fly box. I could only use the largest of it's size because I cannot see under a sixteen to tie it on to the tippet. I do not know what a RS2 is. I have heard of WD40's though, but I don't have any.

Mike:
I'd forgotten about that set of flies. That's a great Guadalupe trout selection. It hits just about all the bases. Thanks for the link.

Kelkay:
You can buy tippet threaders and pre-thread some of the smaller flies on tippet, or get a C&F Threader Box and thread the small flies on the threaders in the box, then off onto the light tippet on the water.

That is a good idea, I have seen them, but they are expensive. Even then I don't know if I could see it good enough. I hope to get new glasses in a few months, that should help matters. This time I am going to the only doctor who can help me see better. The others haven't gotten my prescription just right. If somebody has one of those things you are speaking of, tell me how you like it. Eventually I may get one.
