I go with Varner's approach. The 100mph suit was the last key to the puzzle for me. It killed me to spend the money on it, but it's worth every penny IMHO.

I learned a lot about keeping warm riding a motorbike in the winter. Gerbings are the best in heated clothing. I take my gloves with me in the boat when I really need heat. It works wearing that kinda gear on a bike or in the boat.

Man, I really appreciate the pictures and all of the responses. Coming from Florida originally I'm a little green on the cold weather thing. This helps. I'd feel really stupid asking what some of these items were and now I don't have to ask. I'll be making out a Christmas list and getting some of it early I want to thank everyone for their inputs. I'm still up in the air on boots/shoes. They have to be non-marking as I have a glass interior/no carpet. I don't want to overkill so I'm not sure how much thinsulate to get in them ie 400, 600 1000! Wow, don't think I'd need the 1000 but what do I know. Cheers.

Don't do an overkill, especially with fleece. I know your not going to be out on the tundra like Bear Grylls but it's still not good to sweat when you are cold. I get along fine with cheap wally world cotton long johns and an insulated overalls. As long as you don't get your feet wet you should have no problems with them. Anyway it could be 80 on Chistmas day around here.

Whatever you wear, you want to make sure it fits kind of loose. This will allow for the warmth your body puts out to circulate underneath the layers of clothing. To tight and the warmth is contained, therefore it doesn't circulate. When temps are below 40 degrees, I'll wear fleece lined jeans, thermal top, t-shirt, medium duty jacket, waterproof insulated boots, knit stocking hat and gloves. Over top of all of that I wear a BPS 100 mph suit, for wind and moisture protection, but any type of wind/moisture resistant shells will suffice. Ideally, you would want some type of polypropylene base wear to wick away sweat, especially if it's cold and humid. The whole goal is to create an insulated, loose cocoon around your body to allow your bodies warmth to move around, sort of like an oven. I have been on the water with temps in the mid 20's wearing this set up and remained comfortable the entire trip Some of us have a hard time finding loose clothing.

.... I've been comfortable in 28 deg. temps/25mph winds with this. not catching any fish, mind you, but comfortable Great thread, guys! Coincidently, I've been giving this subject some thought myself. It's posts like these that make this one of the best fishing sites on the Internet, bar none. Thx.

I wear fleece long johns, top and bottom. Heavy cotton sweat pants and shirt (Cabela's brand, not wally world specials). A wind proof shirt on top. Insulated Cabela's bib overalls. And if it's really cold, a heavy canvas work coat, and stocking cap. With all of this, I can layer down and up to suit the temps pretty well.
I like wearing overalls instead of coveralls to maintain better upper body movement. The windshirt is usually enough, and allows me free range of motion. I usually only have to wear the heavy coat when the big motor is on.

Above all else you should have warm feet it all starts there. At least 2 pair of socks, one of them should be thermal. There's my 2 cents.
You guys know everything..... I'm just an idiot....no problem........

In addition to the above ideas. I wear a skier style head band around my neck. It fits pretty well because I have a big neck to hold up my fat head.

One of these babes will give you shade in the summer and keep BOTH SIDES WARM in the winter. I don't know what kind of boat you have but mine would sink! lol
I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here!
