Does anyone know if it is legal to tow a boat in Texas with a truck with Farm Truck license plates? I've searched the TXDOT site pretty extensively and haven't seen anything about that particular question.

I know I can call and ask, but that would have to wait until Monday and I was curious if anyone here had any experience with this.

I would think No. I have farm plates on my trailer, and I got pulled over once for moving with it. I think if it's not farm related, and you have a farm tag... youll get a ticket. It was about $165 dollar ticket also.

Thanks guys I'll probably just go ahead and get the tags switched over since we live in town now anyway. I'm probably already illegal as it is.

I wonder if I could convince a Highway Patrolman that I have a catfish farm and that was why I needed the boat AND the farm tags? That would be an interesting conversation on the side of the road, but the flyrods might be difficult to explain.

Yes it is legal, In the old days, farm plates were for farm related use only. IE. to and from the feed store or hardware store, grocery store or Church. Anything that was directly related to farm use or personal existance. Today, Rules simply state that in order for you to have farm tags on your tow vechicle, all you have to have is a farm animal. What you cannot do is run a business out of the vechical like a cattle hauling company or a building/construction, or advertise on the vechicle like a magnetic sign. But it does allow you to use the vechicle for personnal pleasure like pulling a boat, going to the movies, vacation, etc.

I had a gentleman repair his x-tra large pontoon boat and did so,with "farm exemption".It was pretty obvious he hauled hay along the river to feed his stock!

A lot of the cattlemen that run cows on the islands just off the Texas coast actually use barges to move the animals back and forth.

I wondered the same thing. I passed a guy pulling a huge cigarette boat coming home from Alabama a couple of weeks ago. He had Texas farm tags on his truck.

Have done it... Doesn't mean it's legal!!! Are you tax exempt for any agricultural or farm based reasons? Would be justification but I would call the Dps to make sure. Hope that helps!

So you can use a farm tag if you tell them you are just taking that twin engine 25' Center Console with outriggers and tower to fish a farm pond?
