I've got a 05 HPDI w/140 hours on it. A couple of weeks ago I'm out on Amistad and notice that the motor is only getting up to about 4500 rpms or so. Normally it'll put out about 6,000. I notice on the electronic gauge that the fuel p.s.i is dropping to about 200 or so when I hit 4500 rpms. The problem is intermitten, occasionally the pressure would get to about 400 and the motor would run fine. the pressure would be about 960 psi or so at an idle. I call the local yamaha shop and am told that it must be clogged fuel filter and it'll cost about 400 bucks to fix it...OK I drop it off there. A couple days later I call the shop and I'm told that it's the high pressure fuel pump and It's going to cost several thousand. I tell the shop it's under warranty and they tell me it's not covered. I'm getting pretty PO'd and call yamaha. Yamaha tells me it's not covered because it's not defective, the problem is contaminated fuel. They go on to give me some bs that ethanol is now in the gas and that's what caused the problem or there was some debris in the fuel line. The motor has been properly maintained. Should I be as mad as I am? Should they (yamaha) cover this repair under warranty. Has anyone had any similar problems? I'm really chapped. What say you? Thanks..........gary

I would be hacked off!!! I have a 06 HDPI which is under warranty, but it makes me question how good that warranty is. I figure the warranty is like insurance for any problems that arise as long as you are not abusing or taking care of your motor. No idiot is going to purposely put contaminated fuel into their tanks. So if that is their reasoning or slick way of getting out of paying the claim, I think it's a pretty lame warranty. Good luck and keep us posted!!!

That's exactly how I feel. If there was/is debris in the fuel line shouldn't the filters catch it? I'f figure you change the filters and all is good. What good would the filters be if they let stuff get through and cause problems to the pump? Like I said this is going to cost several thousand dollars. Way more then the warranty costed. What a raw deal. I'd heard yamaha stood behing their products. I've got a knot in my gut just thinking about this.

Did you have the high micron added filter put on when the fuel industry went to the ethanol fuel? The one that looks like a oil filter.

If infact it was bad fuel it shouldn't be Yamaha's deal it should be the fuel station where you purchased the bad fuel. Proving that would be tough though...you could pull a fuel sample and maybe tell you something.

Those fuel filters that are on the Yamaha's should be replaced once per season and they aren't cheap but it is normal maintenance procedure.

Sorry your motor is down and I am sorry you feel Yamaha has wronged you. Not sure which way I feel it should go without all the data. Good luck and I hope once you get it back it runs well.

i agree thats why you get a waranty to take care of major problems like that unless it is abuse and it does not sound like it is they should take care of it.

No, the boat didn't have the big filter on it. It does now. The dealership told me that they started putting them on all the boats in 06. If it needed it I'd have thought yamaha would have sent notification to owners, sent out a bulletin or something like that.

Gary..

I recently had a simular problem with my 3.3 Ltr Series II HPDI 200 Yamaha. It would bog down getting out of the hole when fuel demands are higher due to loading up the engine.

My dealer found the strainer screen on the fuel pump was clogged with fine particles. He cleaned the strainer screen and she's good to go.

If it is fuel, get a jack, and lift your boat at both corners and siphon one gallon of gas at a time from the lowest corner of the boat until there is no discrepency between the container you are siphoning it into.(you want the fuel to be the same color). Then empty out the main water seperator and secondary filter on the driver side of the engine. Pump the bulb until it is tight and start it up you will be fine. You can also put water ISO HEAT into your gas tank in addition to checking your spark plugs. If it is not that ask for the specific code that was run and call Yamaha. Hope that helps but that shouldn't be a more than 150 dollar project unless the engine in hydrolocked under that circumstance it should be covered by warranty. In addition check the 1st cylinder. Hope that helps the Yamaha is a great engine normally there are no problems with the engine and when they are they are minimal.

To many screens and filter issues buy a MERC and be done Yam always knows the problem but won't put it on until AFTER you spend a bunch of money and they say you know if you had this it would have never happend. And yes guys I do know about Yam before you ask and I still think they suck... Plus they blow a power head at the blink of a hat. I know of 7 this year and 4 after they replaced it with a new one never again... Merc does have some issues as well they all do but when it comes time for warranty can't beat the Merc.

Drainable 10 micron filter kits are $45 dolars at acedemy.

Filter it before it even gets to the motor.

I don't have a water seperator filter on my boat yet. I have a real hard time finding a place to install it. In any case I use this product. I can honestly say that I can feel a difference in the performance of my 90 hp Yam. So until I get the filter installed I believe this is helping me now.
OOOPS forgot to add this. Now it explains what I wrote earlier...

If you are having trouble with the motor bogging down and cutting out then yes. However the water seperator (filter) is not a performance upgrade but rather a percausionary measure to ensure the safety of your motor. I can tell you from experienceu water + gas = bad.
