A outdoor writer friend of mine (Matt Williams)called me yesterday. He said the TPW are looking to puting slot limits on catfish and gar for Richland Chambers, Lake Waco and Lake Lewisville. Right now they are saying no catfish between 30 & 45 inches and only 1 over 45 inches. He also said they were looking at limits on gar. That sounds crazy to me.
They will be holding meetings to get input on this before or if they do it.
So if you do or don't like the idea of this let them know. coach

well the first thing they need to do is remove catfish from the list for bow fisherman. i agree with the limit purpossed above. cats do not grow fast. i would hate to see the last of the big freshwater fish go away, like the striper population has due to people keeping large fish. i am proud to live in a free country with freedom of choice, but when it comes to perserving wildlife we need rules for those who do not care for the future.

Well the bowfishing has been struck down and is now against the law in Texas.

Okay but if they are keeping fish within their limits they are free to do as the law allows them right? So if they want to keep 25 blues that are 15 pounds plus they are exercising their freedom until the law makes it otherwise.

But what do I know...

you are correct. they are well within thier rights...but all of the people fishing the red river 15 years ago were within thier rights keeping all those 20 lbs plus stripers and look at the river now. no one thinks of the impact they have on the fish population. i am just one man...right
But what do I know...

sounds great to me ... keeping these breeders safe should mean an endless supply of fish (eater, box fish) under 10# so's the guides can stay in bidness & take out thousands of fish each year in 25 fish limits ... also will insure plenty of big fish for the trophy trips during the winter ... i'm all for it

this BS about big fish not tasting good is just that, BS

regards albertking

catfishing is now an industry ... it's best for the industry to eat baby catfish

The TPWD does a good job in figuring out these slot limits, bag limits, etc. They do studies of the lakes for population and sizes of certain fish. I'm not sure about any of you guys but I'm not smart enough in catfishology to determine what the limits should be. I have to assume that these smart marine biologists and scientists make the right decisions.

I'm hesitant to make the leap that keeping some big catfish hurts their population. I'm not sure about you, but I don't imagine there are only a few big ones in the lakes - most area lakes are doing extremely well. Perhaps the above lakes are exceptions - only through these studies can it be determined.

As for me, I hope to catch and keep a large blue this upcoming weekend from Ray Hubbard. As for the comment above "when they get that big there not good eating anyways" - I think you must have eaten the wrong part.

Take a kid fishing!

That is true but the law is the law and some people feel that as long as they are within it they are fine and I agree. Now I do not agree in keeping big cats, not because they do not taste good but because I told myself I would not keep one when I did. But I am not going to criticize the person that keeps what he wants regardless of my views on fishing.

For example many folks release black bass and well I eat all the ones I catch as long as they are within the parameter of the law.

Live and let live as long as we are within the law.

And speaking of harming our fishing resources below damns it looks the Dubya is at it again. Endangered Species Act
