All the newer Daiwa baitcaster have a feature that you simply press back "UP" on the thumb bar after you make a cast and the reel is engaged. Makes for easy one handed use. It is a designed feature for flipping and does not harm the reel. The reel Thomas is referring to is the limited anniversary edition of the Zillion. It has a 7.3 retrieve. Also Daiwa has a few other reels in the 7.1 ratio at most every price point. Since I pitch and flip right-handed, I use a left-handed reel, so I don't have to switch hands. Learned that from Jay Yelas. He put me on to the Team Daiwa TDX LH reels. The button to engage and disengage the reel is on top of the frame. Never have to turn the handle to engage or disengage the spool. Don't know if they make them anymore, but I have 4 of them. I wish the flipping model of the Shimano Core would come in a left-handed model. Sounds like it might have the same mechanism.

By far, my favorite is the Shimano Castaic. I have two of the older CA200's, with the thumb bar that goes all the way across, on top, to engage the reel after the pitch. However, it's a 6.4:1 ratio and it would be perfect if it had the faster 7:1 ratio reel, for getting the hawgs out of the cover quickly. The upper thumb bar is very handy and quicker than turning the reel handle to engage it. The drag works fine, too. I have two of them and wish I had another But if there is a way to put in a 7:1 drive gear I would do it. Does anybody know about that?

Awesome. Good stuff. I guess I really am looking at a strict Flipping reel. I love this site. I may need to give Daiwa a re-try. I used to work in the industry back in the early 90's and I had a few "difficulties" with my Daiwa reels. I used to use nothing but them. Their customer service team was giving me the run around and so, I moved to Shimano at that point. I lived right between their offices in Southern California.
It might be time to give them another shot and let bygones be bygones....

I have been told by Tim Renaeu once that the castaic is a beast. Great guts, the eye hold up well to braid, and keeps tickin. Apparently he's pretty tough on his stuff. Revo, new curado, and castaic. Can't go wrong.

You can use anything really. I use a Shimano Curado and it works just fine.
