2 pc fly rod extinct? 3 pc fly rod almost extinct? 4 pc fly rod – current favorite among manufacturers
If the choice were mine I would choose a 2 pc fly rod, not for portability but for utility.
My 4 pc fly rods stay “rigged and ready” in the 2 pc configuration except for travel, which is seldom.
My old 3 piece Sage RPLX 9wt has been my favorite for years – but now retired.
The new 8ft TFO Mini-Mag is 3pc is based on strength mechanics of guide placement, and each section only ~33 inches compared to 9ft, 4pc @ ~28 inch.

4 piece. i don't get to travel 12 times a year but i do travel a few times. if nothing else to visit family that is too far away to drive. while my 4 piece rods often stay ready as 2 piece, the extra ferrules don't seem to bother the rods at rest any more than when they are in action

There is a reason I read just about every topic on here whether it sounds interesting initially or not. I never considered leaving my four piece rod in two pieces until I read what you fellows said above. Sometimes you're teaching even when you don't know it.

No way I would ever buy a 2 piece....and have replaced most of my older original 2 piece rods w/4 piece. The extra cost is well worth it in the long run.
Several reasons for that...travel, of course, is a main reason, but certainly not the only one. I travel w/duffel type bags...just load up the bottom section with 4 piece rods and pack in a weeks worth of stuff and still easily get within airline weight limits. Never lost one, had one damaged, had to pay "extra" for handling, or ever had any problem with an airline with this approach. Just ask someone who checks their 2 piece rods about their experiences. No comparison.
I do a lot of pond fishing...both at my ponds and at other folks ponds. The 4 piece is just far superior in useability and transportability. We often break down the rods to get into tight places.
Ever try to sell a 2 piece? I can tell you they have very limited marketability in comparison to the 4 piece.
Even if you don't travel much or any, the 4 piece is the best choice, IMO.

Hey ML, good to hear… Of course you wouldn’t purchase a 2 pc fly rod these days even if you could find one, except a beginner rod for your grandkids. Here is what my early model TFO 2 pc, 5 wt produced - I wouldn’t sell it for anything ...

I am pretty sure that the only reason they used to only make two piece rods was simply that the materials technology was simply not up to it. Now that it is, why not make them all three or four piece? Of course marketing and manufacturing considerations fall into the mix but strictly engineering...again, why not.
Good point you brought to the table George!

The first fly rod I ever bought was a four piece LL Bean travel rod, but I returned it immediately because it felt way too heavy and had three dead spots in the blank at the ferrules. I bought a two piece Sage Discovery rod and loved it. Even I, as a brand new fly caster, could tell the difference in the feel of the two rods.
Since then, the technology has vastly improved to the point that most multi-piece rods are as good as their two piece counterparts. (I say most, because I recently won a seven piece March Brown travel rod that was a dog and casted like a crow bar.)
For me, the real turning point came with the Winston 5 piece LT rods, which cast wonderfully.
Since I'm now into steelhead and salmon fishing and travel with Spey rods, I can't do without the four piece rods. Mickfly

Mickfly, I'm also into steelhead, salmon & spey rods. Where have you been going & when? Any suggestions for someone like me from the Northwest who's just getting settled into North Texas? PM me if you don't want to get off topic here.

I go for portability. My H&H/PacBay 6'6" 2wt is the longest 2-piece I'd want.
I recently purchased a Cabela's 7-piece Stowaway blank. I'm going to experiment over the winter and hope to have a 6-piece spin-fly combo come springtime. The 15" sections will fit nicely in my motorcycle saddlebags.

my most expensive rod cost around 150 bucks & its 2 piece, as are all my rods except a 5 Wt St.croix thats a 4 piece, i like the 2 piece rods cause ya gotta put 'em together before ya fish & it takes half the time to assemble my 2 pc than it does my 4, if I could afford to travel I might think different but 2 piece is fine with me. The only rod that I have ever had broken on the water by a fish was a 4 piece spinning rod, so I'm kinda biased against lots pieces anyway. and honestly, the fish don't care

oops, almost forgot...thats an awesome rainbow George, bet it kept ya busy for a while on a 5 wt.
I just ordered some Sage 290 gram line, more than a 9 wt but not quite 10, I will try it on my St Croix 8 wt & see how well the big bugs fly.

Wow I must be a dinosaur. I like 2pc. rods. More pcs means more opportunity for me to break/mess something up . Travel for me is load up the SUV and drive all day and night. IF I were to fly I would ship my rods via UPS to my location and NEVER let airline employees touch my fly gear.

Thats why I love the 4 peice because I just carry on. Not to mention it fits very well in the trunk of the car.
It's more than the catfish would do.
