Those of you that use the above; how do you use it? i.e. fillet, chunks, with or w/o scales, head, and what about the eggs since many of them are carrying eggs now.

Cut shad is such a better bait than carp or buffalo , why bother . IMHO

Mando----Carve off a nice fillet and cut it into cubes 1x1 or 2x2--depend on the hook and what you are going after. With or without skin--your preference. Skin holds better.

Mo cut shad is great, however, in the winter months sometimes it is hard to come by. I have about 10 quart bags of frozen shad but I figure it would not be a bad idea to have some buffalo and carp. I may hit Grapevine as it has a good population of buffalo.
Fishing Rich, I figured I would use it skin on but I was unsure of the size so thanks for posting that.

leave skin on, fillet, cut fillets into 1" strips...most of the times i will hook a fillet only one time...i dont have any experience with buffalo or carp...but that is what i do with drum...as long as it is fresh, i say give it a try

We usually leave the skin on. It's great and stays on the hook a long time. You can also use the heads. I caught my P.B. 44#er on a big buffalo head fishing with Mickey.

I was with Mickey of trophy catfish adventures, and if I remember right it was either an 8/0 or 10/0 circle hook. As far as size, it was pretty big, probably 5-6" from top to bottom. It was the whole head, not split in half. We were fishing for a trophy and I got it. I was lucky enough to be the person sitting by the rod when it doubled over. We also used buffalo strips, and very large cut shad. The smaller shad, he would cut a flap into them instead of cutting them in half. But even the smaller ones he had were bigger than the ones I usually net. I think he brought them down from Texoma with him. This was on Tawakoni last Christman Eve Day. I caught a 37.5lber on Tawakoni back in Feb. during the NTTC tourney using a live goldfish. I believe my friend bought them at Cabelas. We couldn't find shad anywhere at the time. Hope this helps Mando.

I can only repeat most of whats been posted ... I prefer shad, but when I can't get them, cut strips of carp or buffalo can do a good job. Skin on, strips about 1" wide & 6" long with a BIG circle hook in one end. Have caught some blues over 20 that way. Will try to do so next Wednesday

Mickey and Cody are quite a team. Thanks Bama. What suprised me most about that trip, Mickey brought his son Daniel, Mickey really knows his poop, but Daniel suprised the hell out of me with his knowledge on kittys. Mickey's done a great job of passing on his knowledge to Daniel. I look for great things to come from him if he decides to stay away from those green trash fish. I absorbed some of that knowledge but then my brain cells drained out.

what i like about both buffs and carp is that u can keep alive until u cut them. i will catch a couple and put them in a big fish basket in my tank, they will stay alive in there until ready to fish, then i take them out and scale and cut into 1'x1.5" strips. i use them on 8/0 circles.

cut carp/buffalo/drum is my goto bait in the winter. they are easy to catch and make excelent bait. seems like i have better luck with smaller chunks. 1/2 in wide x 2 long is about as big as i go. m ight just be me

Since I don't eat fish, using carp/buffalo/drum for bait has two advantages. I get to fish for the bait and then I get to fish for catfish

If you would like to try for some good flatheads, I would suggest you use either of the live, if they are under a pound. The live carp seems to be the best flathead bait IMO
