I hope your wife has a good job, the first few years are what one might call lean. Go for it you never know until you try.

Yes Jackie my wife works for USPS.Im really not thinking of this for the money I love teaching people to fish. I fish 3 or 4 days a week and expenses are killin me or I would fish 5-7 if I could afford it. So I guess it is partly for the money. But Im just one of those guys that would rather fish than eat. It just doesnt get any better than watching a kid reel in a fish even a 50 year old kid

Thats what Im SKEEERED of, hate to turn it into a JOB Ive thought about this for years but didnt want to ruin what I love. Thats why Ive been debating guiding or getting a license to sell fish. I can catch fish, love to teach, its just all the bs with some people and the pressure when the fish just dont want to bite I know everyone has THEM DAYS.

I think that wanting to be a guide is the same as someone wanting to be a school teacher, you do not do it for the money. You do it because you like to teach and you enjoy seeing others succeed. I am not a guide nor a teacher and i do enjoy hauling in a 40+lb blue, but i get more excited when someone in my boat catches the biggest fish of thier lives. I think if you have that mentality, you will be just fine.

Sounds like a great example. I'm not a guide nor do I want to be one but I think like Jackie said, it's gonna be lean for awhile. I think one other thing to think about is the intense pressure you will be putting on yourself to get your customers on fish. I know from my work that self-imposed pressure can be alot more stressful than being pressured from others. I don't think, in most cases, your customers will be near as rough on you as you will be on yourself. My 2 cents.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever path you choose. thumb

You will have to find something to make you stand out from the crowd. Good service and fish are to be expected from a guideservice.

Try to find a niche. Something you offer that makes you unique by how or where you fish and/or extraordinary catches.
My niche? I specialize in trophy river fish stalked from a kayak.

What will make you unique?

If you don't think its a job, think again, get up a couple of hours earlier to ensure bait. Sometimes you are in the boat with some ahole or very disorderly child and stay for a day.
Stay an extra hour cleaning up the table, coolers, and the boat. Then go home an work on all thats tore up from the previous day. About the time its going real good, counting that stack of cash. The motor, your trailer, truck, or boat mess up bad. Along with batteries, graphs, GPS, R&R, and other expensive things to replace but necessary to have.
Most guides are making a living or what resembles one.

Ive thought about this for years but didnt want to ruin what I love. Thats why Ive been debating guiding or getting a license to sell fish. I can catch fish, love to teach, its just all the bs with some people and the pressure when the fish just dont want to bite I know everyone has THEM DAYS.

Thats the worst of it all, besides the foul weather, being cold, wet, hot, insects, being out on the water when you don't really feel good, or sick.

Nothing better than taking three people and catching a triple limit, then cleaning 75 fish.

Catching bait, putting up with folks, cleaning fish, and cleaning things up to start over the next day, its just all in days work.
So long as I can I will continue to guide and fish on my off days. I really like it.

This business is not for everybody. Start on a part time basis, don't go overboard on advertising. Its a slow building process.

And charge a fair price. Some guys start out thinking that cheap prices will get them business but in reality cheap prices will attract cheap customers, you know the ones that are hard to please and dont tip the guide.
