How deep are you guys typically fishing, and what is a good rig to use. I am a Bass fisherman, but I am trying crappie. I used minows on a float, but nothing. A buddy of mine was vertical jigging, and did better. He was about 10feet down. I finally switched and caught one before I had to leave. Went out the next day, and nothing. Switching various grubs and jighead colors and sizes. Can anyone offer a little help for a frustated first timer. I keep dreaming of that fish fry to be.

EZwave,
Come out to Lake Lavon this Saturday for the fun an festivities CAT (Crappie Anglers of Texas) is having...
$20.00 to join the club, (but not mandantory) for 1 year...
I believe you will find some of your answers there as well as getting to know some of Texas's best crappie fishermen....
There's a post on here for the Lavon get together...(Nov 15th fund raiser, Lake Lavon) Hope to see you there.....
Matthew

Sounds nice, but unfortunately, it is too far / I will be working... In the field for two weeks. Just hoping to hit on some crappie locally as I get the chance. Thanks for the info though.

I caught fish Saturday on Lavon on the bottom in 25-28' water. We were slow trolling points/ledges. Paul caught fish on Ray Roberts in 35' water. Each lake can be different so "how deep"? is tough to answer without knowing where your fishing.

This weekend I trolled with minnows in about 25 ft of water. I use a Capps and Coleman rig on my poles, and fished with 6 poles.
I fished each pole at different depths until you get a pattern. Mine was three cranks up from the bottom in 25 feet of water. I fished Lake Lavon on Sunday morning.

Matthew is correct about the club thumb, but truly understand about not being able to make. This forum is a great way to learn real quickly also.

Hope this helps in any way.

Greg

Well... I am out at Ft Hood fishing in Stillhouse. It is a man-made lake, so there is a lot of flooded timber and deep rock ledges. Thanks for the info, I never dreamed they would be that deep. I always figured Crappie were more shallow and stuck to brush piles. I will try some different moves. Thank you so much for the responses.

Make sure you are vertical jigging on that timber if it's deep (25 to 30 feet). When you are working that timber lift up slowly and have patience. There are some depths that crappie will hold all year on timber. Stay patient and fish S-L-O-W. You will figure out something every time you go fishing for crappie that will help you the next time you go. I would also suggest to keep a journal. It's tough to keep up on it but it's worth it in the long run.

Good luck man!

EZwave,

Search through the Crappie thread and you will find some neighborly folks in your area that will help you out with Stillhouse, Belton, Georgetown and Granger.

Tight lines

Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.

Jerry,

When slow trolling that deep and catching fish on the bottom, what's making you fish that deep. Is it experience for the lake, you can see fish marked on your ff that deep, etc.....? hmmm My thinking would be to fish where I saw bait fish. fish

Happy and Safe Fishing,
