http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/080408fotw.phpthis is my favorite fly tied by an alaskan native who now guides mamai for big bonefish... tarpon toad, clousers, spoonflies, really most saltwater flies should do the trick, on my 8wt i run a 40# butt section, then a 20# leader and 16# tippit. if i was fishing the jetties i would have a a spool of skinking on the reel and switch to floating if i need to...

jetties and beach you'll use mostly baitfish patterns. just hit google or walk into any fly shop. literally, any baitfish pattern. deceivers / clousers / surf candy / ep baitfish etc.
if you fish the surf much you might want an intermediate line. it will help you keep a tight line because the surf won't blow it around as much as a floating line.
surf at 0:dark:30 you can fish big poppers. 3/8 inch diameter or bigger. fish them FAST. you have to pop them, not just let them slide over the waves.
on the jetty sinking line is a blessing and a curse. there are barnacle covered rocks just waiting to cut your line in half. if you are fishing FROM the rocks i'd stick with a float or intermediate or at least an integrated head with float running line. if you are fishing from a boat TOWARDS the rocks, by all means use a sinking line.

I am new to fly fishing too.
What size rod and reel for reds and trout? I have a #6 rod that is use for white bass around central TX (Austin)? what is a good price for a beginners set up? rod, reel, line? I paid about $200 for the set up I have. It's all Cabella's brand equipment.
I live near Cabellas and I'm only 1 hr from San Antonio & Bass Pro.
Shut up and fish!
