how to set up a jug line. Ive never done it or see it done, but I hear you can catch some big fish on them. Also about what depth should they be used at?

I'd recommend you do some searching on this forum and on the internet, as most people aren't going to want to post a full post on how to do it.
But I'll give you some basics:
- You can make them out of bottles or foam, or buy them. If you're doing it on the cheap, make them. If you make them, you can use 2-liter soda bottles, laundry soap bottles, anything that floats really. If you want easy, you can buy them. For store bought, I like the Jugs By Bert type. There are also flagging juglines that look really good that you can buy.
- I put mine on the bottom, and vary the depth by time of year. Seems like I have more luck in the 15-20ft range in the winter, shallow in the summer. Again, read the posts from more experienced fishermen. If they're catching them in 5' depths, there ya go.
- Use live bait or cut bait - I like shad, perch, or big minnows. I also like goldfish from the baitshop. Though pricey, big blues like 'em.
- Read the TPWD site for regulations on how to mark them. In Texas they have to be white and have your name/address/phone number written on them. Spray paint and a sharpie will get you there with the homemade ones.
- Be courteous - don't put them in front of the boat ramp, swimming areas, people's private docks, etc. Be smart about it.

Nope, I got that wrong I guess - no phone number required per the TPWD site (but I put it on there). However it says you gotta put the date you put it out there.... what a pain, mark it each time you use it? I might gamble on that one, I never leave a jug for more than 2-3 hours.
Here is the quote from TPWD:
"Gear Tag: A tag constructed of material as durable as the device to which it is attached. The gear tag must be legible, contain the name and address of the person using the device and the date the device was set out. Date is not required for saltwater trotlines or crab traps. For juglines and freshwater trotlines, properly marked buoys or floats qualify as valid gear tags."

I put the info right on the jug with the marker. The date requirement somehow slipped past me until now, so I might use some masking tape with a date. Easy enough. The tape isn't durable, but if you're changing it monthly, no problem. The name/address info will be durable with a sharpie directly on the jug.
Sometimes I sit and watch, if I want to fish nearby. Often on Ray Hubbard I'll put them out then go look for sand bass/hybrids somewhere else, and come back in 1 or 2 hours.

. . . . However it says you gotta put the date you put it out there.... what a pain, mark it each time you use it? I might gamble on that one, I never leave a jug for more than 2-3 hours. . . . . BAD IDEA - You will DEFINATELY get a ticket and fine if warden pulls up to check your floats, (even as you are putting them out . . .) and there is no date on them. Save yourself the fine and embarrasement - put the date on it . . . . every time . . .

You're probably right... even though I don't like it. Again, should be easy enough with masking tape for the date. Just replace it every trip and you're good to go (or every 30 days).
