I have to second the hammer...Although gas prices might be a bit easier...
I still can't get used to the talking that the cats do when you clean/filet them if you don't use the hammer first...

I the summer I put them in a cooler full of ice and water. They are usually dead 20 mins later when I get home. I take my little ones to the local kid fish and have always wanted to let loose on one with a fishbat as soon as it hit the bank... fun for the whole family.

i aways try to take my portable drill with me when i fish, and right under the left eye drill i 1/8 hole no more than a half inch deep, then go to the right side of the gill plate and drill two holes 1 inch deep, and 3/4 inch apart one inch from the gill plate, this i find is probley the most humane way to kill the little booger, it takes a while to do it but soon you will be able to do it fast with practice, after you gut and gill them, keep the entrails and head , when you get home , you can bury them all togeather or one at a time like i do, in a small box, in your back yard, and dont forget the little white crosses when you put them in the ground, IT FEELS SO GOOD TO DO THINGS RIGHT AND WITH NO PAIN TO THE FISHES,

Um .. yeah ... I feel like I'm watching Doctor Evil's cousin at work. Anyways ...
Simple method. Put them on ice; they'll go to sleep fast enough, never to awaken again.

I just cut their gills like Tiny showed. It works pretty good. I used to just skin them alive. I never really thought about being nice to them. Theyre just fish.

Bass and crappie (yes, I eat bass) are usually dead by the time I get them home, and if not, a stab into the brain does the trick. I have YET to successfully kill a catfish before cleaning it if I didn't bring them home on ice, have tried all sorts of different stuff, but nothing works for me.
No fish is too good for the grease.

Keeno, You're working way to hard at this. I'd mis too many fish if I was working with all the tools in the boat.
